Whats a great vocal mic for under a grand?

I am a male and have a baritone/tenor voice and would be singing pop rock alt music.

Shure sm57 or 58. Ignore the flogging I'm probly about to get and at least try one before you spend the big bucks.

Actually, lean towards the SM58, a vocal mic which is essentially just like the SM57 (a basic, decent instrument mic) when the windscreen is unscrewed. So you'd have one mic that can serve two functions..

I actually already have an sm58... i know that is the industry standard....but i have a hard time believing that is the best mic i can get for recording purpses?

Audio Technica 4033...

I wouldn't track vocals through anythin else..... well under a grand

Yes and no. Sometimes a 57 or a 58 is the right mic for recording. It depends. Other decent dynamics would be a Shure SM-7 or an EV RE-27.
As far as condensors, I really like the Octava MC-319 (from The Sound Room only ). It's round, dark sounding mic without the hyped high end that a lot of budget priced condensors have. I really like this one.
AT-4033 at the same price point ($300) is a great workhorse. Decent on vocals and sounds good in front of an amp as well as acoustic guitar.
A Neumann TLM-103 is nice at around $700

Im biased because I own a 4033...

So I would say go with that.... like Track Rat said... You can mic a guitar amp, record acoustic guitar, vocals, or use for a drum overhead..

A really nice all purpose mic.

That's what I was going by...I have an AT3525 and still like the sound of the 57, although I must admit I usually stereo mic, use the meat from the 57 and the high end from the AT...and the flogging never came, mebbe I shouldn't be so cynical

Check into the RODE NTK for $499.

It's on par with the Neumann TLM103 (...many say it's better, including myself) and it's perfect for your vocal range.
I know this because my voice is in the same range and I own an NTK... and I also do the same style of music as you.

The NTK is a tube mic, so you'll get alot of warmth out of it without losing any clarity whatsoever.

The AT-4033 is also a great mic, but it's still a notch below the NTK, IMHO.

Charlie, also check out the Studio Projects T3 tube microphone,
it's supposed to be less $$$ than before as they have the TB-1
(single pattern) tube microphone coming out soon also.
Street price on the TB-1 should be about $300, and should be an
interesting comparison to the more costly NTK.

Hey guys I did some pricing at the stores and the guys at the Music store kept pushing the Rode NTK($499)

over the AT 4033(299$)... now do you think that is because the Rode costs more?

or is Rode the better mic, hence it costs more?

Honestly i can probably only afford the AT 4033...

What do you guys think?

Of course they're pushing it because it's more expensive.

But if the 4033 is all you can afford, then get it, make the most of it, and enjoy it. And don't look back because it's a great-sounding mic.
