My first recording

Hi guys,

Could you give a listen and give me some opinions on my first recording of my band.

Some of the equipment used:
Mics: Sm57, ECM8000
Drums: Yamaha DD50 pads (patched with samples)

All sorts of opinions are more than welcome!

I just listened to your song twice, once on lo-fi and then I downloaded it to get the whole picture. I have a Yamaha DD55 drum thing so I was interested in the drum sound you got. It sounds like the drum stereo mix might by panned to hard. It just didn't sound like a real kit, especially the drum rolls, when the sound is either on the right or the left. There didn't seem to be any middle ground. I like that lonesome guitar sound. The lead vocals are hard to hear. The voice really needs to project more, can't understand the words. Vocals are tough for me too. I think the rhythm guitar needs to be a louder on the right. Its there, but hard to hear. I think the tempo drags a bit, maybe a few beats per minute faster. The recording sounds clean enough - good job on your first song. Keep it up!

damn...people's first recordings are certainly getting cleaner and cleaner. My first recordings sounded like absolute shit, and covered with hiss.

to me, your vocals are the weak point, and your guitar tends to cover it up much of the time also. keep on pluggin'

Is the guitar only on the left side?? I don't think I like that much at all. I think it makes the mix sound thinner. I agree about the vocals too. Go and get yourself a Marshall V67 or a Studio Projects C1. I think they would do your voice much better justice. I think your voice kind of has that early Tom Petty sound, but much less intonated. I am sure people will disagree about the voice, but thats just what my first impression was. Not bad for your first time out though.

True, the DD50 drums sound pretty weird especially in the rolls. I do plan to rerecord with real drums once I get my hands on a drumkit!

As for the guitar, I close mic-ed the amp and panned it hard left, and I also ambient mic-ed and panned hard right, hoping for some fullness in the guitar. Did that for rhythm guitar also but panned the otherway.

Vocals are getting drowned out. Must redo.

Also how is the bass guitar sitting in the mix? T'was recorded using a Zoom505II!

well, firstly the song sounds really nice to me...good tune...good lyrics (if sometimes hard to hear)...the posts above seem to cover the points i'd like to make myself...try to get your drummer to get hold of a real drumkit as soon as possible, nothing beats the sound of a real set.
the bass and keyboards do a great job of keeping the rhythm and carrying the melody...the rhythm guitar isn't all that clearly audible, though, it would be nice if it was mixed up a teeny bit more.
nice guitar tone...a tele isn't it?
