Quantegy ADAT Tape really Bad?

I talked to an Adat Tech, and he said NEVER NEVER use Quantegy tape in an xt-20. This is fine, no prob, but I just got a used one, that came with some tapes, and all he had was Quantegy. Does this mean my adat is going to be "gumed up"?

Thanks,

Of all the tape made especially for Adat's the worst one is
Quantegy. I have found that it constantly sheds causing your heads to get dirty.

Is dirtying up the heads the only thing Quantegy does?

I mean, I realize that's bad enough, but I'm doing a session tomorrow using Quantegy tape and there's no music or audio shops near where I live. Is Quantegy more likely to get eaten by the XT? Is its life more limited? Luckily I only have a couple of these tapes.. Should I still go ahead and use it?

Of all the tapes tjhat sre sutable for ADAT, Quantigy is the BEST tape I've used and I record exclusivly on ADATs. HHB on the other hand was the worst by far.

I was just about to start recording when the Quantegy tape was mangled by my XT. But I'm not sure if it was the tape that caused it. I pushed locate 1 when I meant to press 2, so I pressed stop which sometimes when pressed too hard on the remote makes the machine think I want the heads to release, so then I pressed 2 while it was still releasing.. Either the tape sucked or I was too abusive to the machine..

I popped in another Quantegy and took some valium to slow my reaction time on the remote.. So far it's working okay, although i guess I should think about getting it backed up, huh?

Hmmm...

Interesting to read about people's trials and tribulations with various tapes.

I too use Maxell Broadcast thanks to a tip from Mr. Sonusman a few years back... prior to that I had only used Quantegy. HOWEVER... I must confess that the only tape I have ever head eaten by a machine so far was in fact a Maxell Broadcast....

But, it should be noted that the tape cruched severely, yet after a play back or two, straightened out enough that I was able to copy from the tape to a fresh tape (error light blinking like the fourth of July)... but the audio came across beautifully.

I should also mention that the Maxell seem to format with less trouble for me than the Quantegy's ever did. I have one deck that is picky... and the Quantegy's would usually stop during format and have to be reformatted ona different deck.... the Maxells seem to work better in this regard as I have maybe had one or two stop out of the 20 or so that have been formatted on that deck.

I think the tech said he only had problems with Quantegy and x-20s, not the problems with Quantegy on older adats. We got some BASF, which actually changed their name to a different brand. THey seem to work fine so far.

My .01cents worth..............

Iv'e only used 3 brands of tapes;Maxell,BASF (60min formatted)
and Quantegy. Praise to the Almighty Above, knock on wood and
a 4-leaf clover attached to a rabbits foot charm, none of my LX's
or XT's never, ever produced so much as dropout,"ERR 7 code or
chewed/devoured any tape.(With the lone exception of HR.COM
member, dragonworks Quantegy;which was prev formatted on his old 16bit XT-when played back on my 20bit,the "Interpolation Light" flashed infrequently). Mind you, I have always treated my
ADAT's with the luv and affection I treat my own kids (ask any participant in last years HR.COM convention) but my take is;
if you keep your heads clean, provide regular maintenance and inspection, you really should have no probs with the 3 aforementioned tapes!
But heck,what do I know! I'm no expert,but in the years I've owned by ADAT's, I've been blessed! ADAT's and the HD24......
.....RUUUUUUUUULES!!!!!!!!
