Adat XT - no goodtc??

Just got a used Xt and for some reason when a s-vhs tape is put in gives this message in the display: "no go od tc"

Anyone know what this means and how to correct it? The XT will not record, and when I tried to format a new tape got it also displayed the Err 07 message.

Any help/guidance would be appreciated.

If you get "no good tc" either the tape is unformatted, or there is a problem with the tape sensor...

You don't want to be using standard S-VHS tape, the particle binding is very different -- you should use tapes specifically designed for ADATs........

The tape I am using is BASF be EMTEC ADAT DA60. Says recommended by Alesis for Adat on the box....but wait....

It also says it is pre-formatted for 20 bit at 48kHz.....do you think this would be the reason....I think the XT is 16 bit...but I tried to reformat the tape...but it didn't seem to work...

Try another tape... one that is unformatted - if you can't format it then the unit needs a trip to the vet....

no good tc means no good time code. You should never receive this message with a preformatted tape such as the one you were using. If you get this error message in combination with error 7, eject the tape, shut down the machine. Then turn on the machine (you might want to hold play and record as you power up for good luck). IF you still get the same error, you'll need to take your machine to an adat repair place. I had similar problem with one of my adats. This is caused by a problem with the tape threading, or it could be something a little more serious such as the heads not lining up properly with the tape. Another problem could be the tape itself. Good luck. You'll understand soon why adats completely suck.

What a silly thing to say... they take far less maintenance than a 2" analog multitrack ever did!

Blue bear, that's totally irrelevant. No one has 200,000 bones to dish out for a Studer 2" machine.

I agree with blue bear. If an Adat is properly maintained at regular intervals they will give you long hours of use. The tape cost and sound quality still make them a good investment even today.

I have to disagree. If I buy a like new adat on ebay for 700 bucks, I would bet the repair/maintenance cost would exceed the cost of the unit in 3 or 4 years depending on how much the unit is used. Give it a couple more years and the repair/maintenance cost will exceed the cost of the HD24. However with the HD24, you usually won't see any repairs/maintenance.

Having repaired Adat's for about 10 years now I would have to disagree with your statement. Even if you had to invest maybe $100.00 dollars a year on maintenance the machine would still be very cost effective. No matter what type of media you record to you will sooner or later run into problems that require you to get the unit serviced. I agree that the HD24 will probably require less servicing but not everyone can afford to go out and buy one. Adat's are now being bought by people who already have them and need a cheep way to increase the number of tracks they currently have. An Adat in its life time would not cost $2000.00 to fix. I have worked on plenty of black face Adats that have over 6000 hours on the original head and are still running fine if they have been properly maintained.

I again you are badly mistaken! Like I've stated b-4, the max I have spent for any servicing is $40 over the period of 4 1/2 years
just to have normal head-cleaning performed and the Lord only knows how much I have used my ADAT's! As a new owner of the HD24, of course logic states that since their are less moving parts
servicing of same will be a whole lot less, but if you take due care in using your ADAT's, just like ANY OTHER type of recording gear, you will be rewarded with extended life and performance of the ADAT. Also, you don't always know what you're getting when you buy off of E-Bay!
ADAT's, my good man, do not SUCK!!

Yo Fenix, don't be a playa'-hater!! Besides, since I now own the HD24 ,I use my ADAT's only for customers who want their ADAT tapes remixed (what VERY,VERY, VERY few customers/clients I do have) so I believe I'll own my ADAT's for years w/o problems.
Also, my brother has a black-face for 8 years and guess what, besides head cleaning, it never needed servicing!!

Hi all, thanks to those who gave support to my question that started this thread!

Turns out it was the tape...it was formated 20 bit and the XT can only use 16bit tape.

Hope someone can learn from my trial & error!

Have a great day!

hmm that's interesting ... XTs can do both 20 and 16 bit depth... as far as I know...
so, I wonder what led you to that conclusion?
maybe you formatted for 16 and tried to playback at 20? Although, I didn't think you could manually choose the bit depth after the tape's been formatted (the XT/LX would read the format of the tape and set itself up to play it at the right depth)
could it be something else about the tape other than the bit depth?
glad it's working for you now, anyway

Dave

The tape I bought was pre-formatted 20 bit...I returned the tapes and got 2 16bit pre-formatted tapes in exchange...and they worked fine

XT20's can do both 16 and 20-bit....

XT's are 16-bit only.
