Mixing with the HD24

The way i like to do a mix requires around 3 A/D conversions, with the HD24, would i notice a drop in quality?

(into the HD out through effects mixer etc Back into HD, out through mixer buss mix down to two track back into HD, out final mix effects back into HD.)

The HD has 24 track i think i'll be using a few for mixes etc but like i said will these few A/D's have a noticable affect on my mix?

All of the conversions will be performed by the HD24.

Good point fenix but....say with two channels of compression how can i apply it to three or four different sources?

Get a four channel compressor? why i have 24 tracks..just mix it through whatever processing i want and onto another track.

Same thing with multi-effects like reverb say if i want heaps of reverb on the guitar a little on the vocals some on the snare..but i only have one effect processor! does'nt mater i've got 24 tracks!, just bounce them down in groups (for stuff like drums) or individualy.

I know what your saying about mixing on the fly to a master but i have'nt got automation so i like to tackle things bit by bit.

Just wondering if a few A/D conversions would have a bad effect,it's probably that unoticable that im wasting my breath bringing it up.

Good point mixit-g! Rite now I have 6 comps (1 of which is the MultiCom which is basically 4 comps in one, and 5 other outboard comps <I don't count the 3630 as I only use it to control my drum
machines inherent "hiss" factors>) and 3 'Verb units. Prior to increasing my outboard signal processors , I simply re-patched the
lone comp and the dsp onto the track that needed signal processing. With the HD, I have absolutely no conversion probs
only if I'm recording on more than 12 tracks (of which you can't enploy 24/96 conversion)

So if im using a sample rate of 96 i'm limited to 12 tracks???
So i suppose theres no way to convert these back to 48 if i need more than twelve tracks and i'm running the rest at 96, or am i stuck?

Wow that is some outboard gear Q !!! i love it.

I'd rather spend my dough on really good quality single units and bounce them down.

Yo' mixit, I'm still in the early stages of fully utilizing the HD24's
features! Since the time I've been using ADAT's to now, I have never used a sample rate less the 48. As far as the 24 is concerned, out of curiosity, I had set the HD24 for 24/96 @ 48 and then proceeded to arm ALL 24 tracks. When I reached track 13,the 24 dropped to 20 @ 44.1! Mind you,I can't verify if what I said prev'ly is true as I'm 1 of those fools who by-passes the booklet and proceeds right to hands on operation (The only time I
do read the instructions is when I'm sittin on the porcelain throne).
However, I recorded a quick,run-off cover of a particular song of which I used 14 tracks (not all at the same time) but was able to perform this @ 24/96-48 (I will post 2-morrow in the MP.3 forum)
I'll give U some info on it later.

BTW, as far as gear is concerned, I am your PURE,UNADULTERATED,GEAR-ADDICTED JUNKY-SLUT!!!!!
I don't have top-o'-the line gear, nor do I have bottom-feeders either!I'm one of those idiots who, regardless,if i need it or not, will go out and buy gear just to have it! I am a STONE-COLD outboard tweak-freak !

so if i understand you correctly then its 12 tracks @ 24/96 then 12 @ 24/48?

So the HD24 can run two different sample rates in the same song?!

You guys are making me dizzy.

Here is how I run my system normally:
> HD24 24 bits at 48 kHz
> Use up to 24 tracks
> Use ethernet connection to clean tracks through the PC using Sound Forge and variuos Direct-X plug-ins.
> Transfer tracks back to the HD24
> Mix down to external Mixer
> Use 1 to 2 Reverbs using the Aux Send/Return. You can control how much reverb is being used per individual track.
> I use outboard compressors for vocals and sometimes bass.
> Mix down to dat or CDR 16 bits at 44.1 kHz
> Dump mix to PC for Mastering and final CD burning.

You cannot use multiple sample rates at one time. If you use a different rate from which you recorded, your music pitch will speed up or slow down.

What I meant as conversion dropping after 12 tracks was the HD24 dumbed down to 88 after more than 12 tracks are armed!

I bet it just won't let you select more than 12 tracks when you choose 96kHz. I do know that if you choose a low amount of tracks when you first set up a song, it won't let you arm more than what you selected.

Oh yes, I totally agree. In addition, you don't have to worry about a PC locking up while you are recording or mixing down. Nothing kills a good vibe like rebooting during a session, especially when you are on the clock.
