having the right eq sound when done mixing

hard to explain..when eqing compressing getting the good mix after hearing it back sounds good ear wise..then listining to a record..the record sounds like it has some kind of coating over it as if my mix is to noticable..like i said sounds good but i feel every record has this right eq sound and has a coating of maple syrup that makes you say yeh thats an album..sounds too loose i compressed allot and addded allittle reverb to experiment..im using pc multitrack..i would gracefully appreciate any word of wisdom..thanx..
