Rehearsal space blues

I have been having a h#ll of a time finding rehearsal space.. Anyone have any luck? What did you do?

Hey I'm completely talking through my hat here, but check out what (not necessarily, but possibly grunty) services you can provide to local schools and churches. These are both places that need a helping hand from time to time and have large spaces where loud noises aren't a problem. Just pretend you're the Face Man on A-Team and have to scam the space or Hannibal is gonna die.
Theoretical brainstorming at its lowest level.
My solution was to go inside headphones like someone living under some Neo-Nazi oppresive anti-musical regime. But that can't work for everybody.
