well i mix and record in 2 different places...

so i do my recording in my basement...on a slower computer.

and i mix/master (to my ability..lol) on my top floor...(networked comp...) its a super fast p4, blah blah.

so my question is: I have 2 sets of speakers.
One that is an aiwa mini system. i put the settings all at 0 (flat), but the speakers DO have built in powered subwolffers (it says... "200mm subwoofer 4 way speaker system" on each of them).

my other one i am going to pick up tomorrow - but its from my friend who knows a ton about electronics and speakers and shit...i told him i wanted something for recording/mixing.....like a flat pair of monitors and a reciever.
he said he had just the thing...

so basically - where sohuld i put whicih speakers? whicih should i record with (to check how it is showing up on my comp in the basement before recording)...and whichi should i mix with (self-explanitory)?

when i get the info on the new speakers, i'll post them.

mikemoritz is on a distinguished road
Don't even consider aiwa's.....they are awful. Nothing but bass comes from those shitty systems. My advice is for tracking the stuff, get yourself a pair of good headphones. But, maybe your best bet is to track and mix with the same speakers? It'll be worth it, even for the slight trouble it causes.

I agree that the best solution would be to use the better speakers both for tracking and mixing.. But if that's not possible, then at least use those speakers in the basement and the Aiwas upstairs.. The better you track, the less you'll have to fix when mixing.. Plus, you can always comeback and remix without the hassle of re-recording everything..

One other thing, you can use headphones for the actual recording to tape, but use your speakers for getting the sounds right before comitting to tape.

Hope this helps,

Cy

thanks.

the speakers i got are a decent pair of KLH's...they are old, but sound great to me - good freaqu. response too. I didnt take all the stuff home today though, because the reciever started smoking when we turned it on...ha not a good sign.

so i'll mix with the aiwa's, and track with headphones/KLH's?

listen to your mixes on everything you can. the fact of the matter is that no one is going to be listening to your mixes on event monitors, most people are going to listen to your mixes on home stereos, cars, computers, etc.
