New monitors?????

Hi

I´m looking for some new studio-monitors, and i´m not sure which one i should consider. I mainly record and mix acoustic instruments (lots of guitars) so i need speakers with a good midrange.

The one´s i have in mind are, Dynaudios BM6A ( a bit worried about the small size of those, concerning the deph-imaging) and Mackie´s HR824. I haven´t heard the Mackie´s but apparently the bas is to hot in those.

I´d really appreciate some advice in buying new monitors, feel free to suggest other nice monitors. My budget is about 1500$

Good studio monitors shouldn't emphasize certain frequencies such as the midrange of your guitars.

Listen to as many monitors as you can with source material you are familiar with. And i would make a decision on how they sound across all frequencies. Don't forget about the amplification as it is also important in the sound of monitors.

Genelec and Tannoy are popularly recommended monitors.

I would also check out ADAM, since the mere mention seems to create a lot of envy in these forums. I think their low-end stuff, like P11-A, is in your price range.

In my opinion the most important thing with a monitor is that it helps you produce mixes that sound good on other people's gear without you having to do more than a cursory check on other speakers. That's a combination of several factors including flat response, good detail, and wide sweetspot. The second most important thing is that they don't give you ear-ache after a day in the studio.

Don't rush into this. Visit music stores and listen to speakers but don't be pressured to buy. Do a search on HomeRecording.com and the web for people's opinions. Pay attention to the people who have extensively used more than one speaker. For example, there's an excellent thread here comparing the KRK V8 with the Event PS6. The comments by people who say "I bought xyz and they sound great" but who only have their boombox speakers to compare with need to be taken with a pinch of salt unless they also say that they end up with mixes that translate well to other gear. Pay attention to the things they say they don't like about their speakers. Trust your ears over peer pressure.

If you're considering the Mackies you've obviously got sufficient budget. I don't so I've put off replacing my old Sony's until I've saved up enough because I don't think I'll find anything cheap that is much better than what I have (and even then I'll still want the better speakers but will have set myself back several hundred dollars).
