Just bought a used xt-20, 1100 hours

Hi, my band is making the jump from 8 track analog to 2 xt-20s.
One of them has 1100 hours on it. The seller said it had just been serviced and is in perfect order. Should I be worried about the heads? Is there anyway to tell if its working well within the first couple uses?

Also, what tape seems to be the best to use? Alesis says to use the BASF, any opinions? Thanks much
