HD24 or two more 2408s

I was sold on the HD24 but i am starting to re-think this move. A friend, quite an accomplished musician, producer, recordist etc. who recommended I simply add one or two more 2408s for more analogue ins and outs in my system. So I ask you all, what is the benefits of the HD24 and why would I want that instead of the 2408s. I have a Mac G4 with 733 khz and 256 mhz or Ram, digital Performer 3.01, a Mackie 24-8 Board and bucn of synths and samplers, some plug ins and outboard gear. Now, dollar wise, two expansion 2408s cost less tha and HD24 and give me the 24 analogeu ins and outs I want.

On the other hand, with the HD24, if I should switch to a digital board, the HD24 does not become useless whereas the extension 2408s it seems do.

Such decisions. Oh, yeah, and today I got a $2,000.00 check that i was not expecting so, as you might imagine, it is burning a hole in my pocket. What to do what to do what to do?????????

Go the HD24, you can take it out on remote recordings, it will be worth more down the track, more reliable and you wont be putting your eggs in one basket ( or tracks on one machine )

I seems also that the HD24 is a better idea becuase it will auotmatically give me 24 track access throught the 2408 and...if I ever get a digital mixer, which I probably will some day, the other 2408s may become unecessary whereas the HD24 would still be just as useful. That, I believee, is a pretty good reason to go the HD24 route.

How come pro studios don't use HD24s or a similar device (TASCAM, etc.)?

One way to look at it, since like me, you have a external mixer that you might mix on, is that either the 2408 or the HD24 can be used as external a/d and d/a's, and you can use any almost any speed pc or mac to record/play lots of tracks- (but not necessarilly do a complete digi-mix on a 'slower' computer).
The HD24 adds portability and some other advantages, and you already have the computer to do editing on.
Sounds like your already over the hump getting the computer to record on...
I tried the MDR route, but went back to just external converters instead. (-it was mainly a studio-noise issue) I hated to loose the all-in-one aspect, but it can work out fine either way.

I use to have a DAW with 16 in and 16 outs which bought me nothing but pain. I changed it all to an HD24 with a Behringer digital mixer that allows me to do FOH mixes for local bands and record them at up to 16 tracks thru the 2 adat channels to my HD24.
The results are better than I have ever achieved before with much less hassle. The sound quality is simply amazing, what goes in comes out.
