Just save up and buy a RNC, otherwise search ebay for compressors for under $100.00.

save a measly 70.00 more dollars and get the world famed FMR's RNC! This will be the LAST compressor you will ever buy period! Anything better you would probably end up in a quarter million dollar studio! It IS worth every penny. I got mine last week, totally awesome and its a R-eal N-ice C-ompressor too!

I think I'll go with the RNC...the only thing is that I heard it sucks for bass and bass drum and I was thinking this was what I would mainly use it for. Is this true???

For cheap I like the ART Levelar something like 70.00, nice little opto type..Good for limiting and lite compression

No...not true. For bass and bass drums I like to use a DBX 163 or 166 but that's only because I like the "color" of them for those applications in MY music. The RNC is super clean, that's all....and in fact can handle anything you throw at it! heylow Rock Jedi/Indie Snob www.heylowsoundsystem.net |

from personal experience I can say a Behringer Composer isn't half as bad as some people would like you to believe it is... It does - within limits - a really good job for what it costs, and it's fairly sturdy gear as well (as opposed to most other "dead cheap" rack units from Alesis, Art and the likes). Just my $ 0.02

"Behringer composer if you can't afford anything else"...
erm...the composer is actaully a pretty good compressor! i dont know why people are saying to avoid it. have you used it? sure it's not the best, but i have sometimes used a composer OVER something more expensive. i personally dont think it's a bad compressor at all.

The RNC is a better-sounding, more transparent compressor...... that's not always what suits the application.

Abbott, i dont think anyone said the composer was better than the RNC. that's down to personal choice and whether you like the sound of the composer or the RNC.
the composer will be better for you if.. you need gates, need a peak limiter at the end of the compression stage, need side chains (does the RNC have this..) or if you need 2 mono channels. correct me if im wrong, but the RNC will only work as 1 mono compressor, or stereo but with controls for only one side. the RNC is good if you're looking for a more transparent sound as Bruce described it as. go and try them out if you can, that's probably the best advice you'll get. -Romesh

Save your money until you can get something that you wont be looking to replace in 12 to 15 months.
Like any investment, think "long term".

hmm, true, but some compressors, even the cheaper ones will always have a place in the rack. the composer is one of those for many people, so is the RNC probably. im not too familiar with the RNC but I know lots of engineers/producers including myself who have composers amongst the higher end avalons, meeks, focusrites or whatever.

Composer, Hmmmm
I have an HHB Radius 30 tube compressor that I like alot. Also, Digital Performer has a number of plug-in compressor and I just got a composer. I have only used it for one recording so far, I used it on a synth bass part. It was pretty good though it colors the sound alot more than the HHB. By comparison, the HHB does not color the sound at all. The composer seems like it will be use ful and for 99 bucks, how can you go wrong. That's the price of dinner for two in a decent restaraunt and that definitely turns to shit. The Composer does really color the sound which may or may not be a bad thing. On that piece I was sorking on, I might choose ultimately to record the bass with less coloration, however, on other pieces that are more electronic sounding, it would probably work great. We'll see.
