Joe Meek VC6Q vs DMP3 Audio Buddy?
Hey Gidge and anyone else aquanted with these two.
I have squirelled away around $300 for a much needed mic pre and am debating between the Joe Meek VCQ3 and the Audio Buddy DMP3. I primarily record acoustic and electric guitars and bass (DI), drum machine and some vocals to 4-track cassette. Long term hope is for the Yamaha 2816. I am not married to transparant sound as I like a little color to my sound so the Joe Meek is sounding like the winner but the DMP would provide a good input to my computer for MP3 use and I could probably get the RNC also. Can anyone help me with this one? This will probably be my only gear aquisition for an entire year so I want to make the best decision. Thanks in advance ![]()

I have 2 VC3Q's and 1 DMP2....love em both....i tend to go with the DMP2 for cleaner sounds and the Joe Meek when i want a more Meeker sound, although you can get a clean sound with it, but i find it has a lower S/N ratio....but i havent played around with the JM enough to really press its limits.....it would be hard to pick between the 2.......
btw, the AudioBuddy and the DMP3 is 2 different Pre's...the Audio Buddy is $79 and a few years old but a nice clean preamp...the DMP3 is the newer updated model....usually around $185...... |

let me add that when i picked up the DMP2, i got it on Mars closeout (Audiomidi.com matched the price) for $79....I just picked up the vc3q for $99 each.....
if you are not in immediate need, wait ill on a deal....just keep your eye posted on the Hot Deals forum..... |

Thanks Gidge,
I guess the DMP3 is the one I was wanting to compare the JM to. I recall reading your recomendation for it for clean pre's and good converters for digital input to your computer etc. Having never geard either and hearing so much good about the JM's I am torn but I plan on keeping an eye out for a hot sale price. I hear the VCQ6 is going for $299 at Mars this was the one I actually wanted to compare the DMP3 to.

I am in exactly the same boat - looking for a decent pre, preferably two channels, and looking at the DMP3 real hard. But I'm having a hard time coming up with the $200 smacks right now.
Please post if any of you sees a Meek or M-Audio pre at an outrageous price.... Gidge, that means YOU! |

If you like the "Brit sound" of the 60's get that VC6Q-I love mine!
You can link whatever mic pre you get into the Meek if you think you want to use a different pre than what's on board the VC6Q anyway. My vote would be for you to get the Meek first if you don't need a dual channel mic pre right away. |

Looks like I'll be getting a VC6Q.
I called the local GC today and the guy in the recording dept said GC blew them all out because they were not selling well enough and won't be stocking them again. But he has one at home, two months old with manual and no road use he sell me for $200 and I said SOLD. I hope it works out he is supposed to call me back away from work so there is no conflict of interest with his employer. ![]()

I thought they were $299 at the blow out.
Oh well best price new I have seen was still like $390 -$400 something. Has anyone else seen any recent hot deals for $200 new? A warranty would be nice just in case. Anyway they still list for $699 so $200 for a slightly used one does not sound too bad.

Scooter, $200 for a hardly used VC6Q is killer anyway IMHO!
You could e-mail or call Alan regarding his policy for any repair work needed down the road.....(as with any device) |

Fill me in RE: Alan
I have not paricipated in any threads with him but I did notice your were the president of the fan club and he had some info regauding the Joe Meek web site on another thread. So I am assuming by your recomendations he works for Joe Meek or does some repair work and is an industry insider. BTW I am still waiting to hear back from the GC dude. I stopped by the store today to see if he lost my number or something...but it turns out he does not work weekends. I sure hope he comes through or I will be bummed. I also just ordered an RNC from Humbucker Music; they had the "buy now" option on some of these at e-bay @ $175 with free shipping. I was going to go through Mercenary but I took the free shipping.

Scooter, Gidge just has a good sense of humor about the
"fan club"! Alan distributes the Joe Meek line here in the states. E-mail or call him and he'll be happy to help you with questions, in fact underneath it all he's really a gear enthusiast like the rest of us. Good luck on scoring the VC6Q! |

Chessparov and Gidge,
I got the joke, I was also replying in jest about pointing out the fan club issue. My tone of voice and dry sense of humor don't seem to translate through my typing. I guess I should have said "I noticed you were the president of his fan club " I have enjoyed the sense of humor here on the board imensely and Gidge has had some good ones. Proverbs says "laughter is good medicine for the soul" and my soul is much happier with a belly full of laughter.

Alan,
Nice to make your aquaintance in this post. I was just in the mic thread and reading about the VTP production setback etc. I got the $699 list from someones web site that had it for "only" $450. When I heard about the $200 GC blowout I hit all the retailer websites I could find to try to find another active blowout but no luck. I'm calling the local GC guy monday to see if we are still on for the used VC6Q for $200. Congratulations on your succcess with the Studio Project line and best wishes in your future endeavors.

Question for Alan
Okay everybody, I'm going to ask Alan a direct question, so whatever his answer is, it won't be spam. Agreed?
Alan, I have a humbe homerec setup in a spare bedroom: pc-based, Delta 44, Art TUBE MP Studio preamp, Marshall V-67. I want a preamp that will be both cleaner and more versatile, particularly with vocals. I want to spend $200. In that range (plus or minus 50 bucks or so), what would you do in my situation? I know I can get the Joemeek MQ1 (I think that's the model) for $199. I can also get the DMP3. Am I overlooking anything Alan? Know of any retailer bargains out there? Thanks and grateful, Fab4ever |
