getting started

Ok.....I am a local DJ here in Tucson but do it part time. I regular income comes from my work in real estate develpoment with a local builder here in town. Long story short I have corporate burn out and want to get away from the suit and tie and into a better atmosphere. I enjoy the work I am doing when I DJ but want something more. I have wanted to get into recording for a long time but don't know which way to go to get started. I have a good overall knowledge of what is involved but I wouldn't say that my skills and reputation in audio would be ocmpetitive in the market. I need a better background. I know I want to be all digital butmuch more than that....? Anyone who can tell me what is the best way to get started in designing and creating a home studio, on a $5,000 to $6,000 start up budget would be in my debt forever. Partners will also be welcome. Let me know what I am up against so I can start my new career. Thanx

K - I'll tell how to get started in designing and creating a home studio, but I don't know if you're gonna like the answer. Getting started requires the gathering of information, not the purchasing of equipment recommended to you by someone. First question requiring some thought: you say you want to go digital, but what kind of digital? Computer hard disk? A standalone system? Multitrack? Minidisk? Your budget'll cover any of these, but not all of them.

As an educator, I suggest you scope out a couple of schools for audio engineering. I know there is one somewhere in Arizona, as well as other places. Or at least take a basic course in electronic music which is offered by many Junior colleges -- not expensive. A friend of mine took a course and got to thump on the Roland products, like their digital recorders/sequencing, etc.

If you want a new CAREER, you need education. Just watch out for fly-by-night operations. Check, check, and check, and ask others before you drop the cash. But, in school, you pay as you go and, therefore, can't get stung for too much dough.
