Smile new little tune...

Hello... This song is soon finished... Maybe some polishing, but more important, finishing up the vox.. I'd be more than happy to hear what you guys think of it..

I want shit that doesn't sound good pointed out to me. Don't think you'll upset me by telling me.

Thx in advance.

comes in very loud, a little bit raw(too much high freqs for my tastes)

Nice width to the track. I cant hear too much depth though.

The vox sounds like an instument in the sense that it does not really stand out from the music.

I wanted to hear more kick.

I like the percussion sounds and the panning automation or effects you had in there.

Great job with the drum programming! Maybe the snare sound in the main sequence could change over time to make it more interesting. Maybe automating the reverb, using a slight envelope filter or something.

As you've already pointed out the vocals need some attention, I feel the melody could probably be more inventive over this hypnotic chord sequence.

I like the way the hihat moves around all over the place but it's to upfront and harsh for my taste. Just to check my ears I pulled out 'Boards of Canada's "Kid for today", my favorite example of electro 'soundscaping'. I found that they have a great amount of trebly sounds but they aren't as harsh as yours. It's like your sound with a thin curtain covering the high frequencies. X) [What?]

I really like the part from 0:46-0:57, I think this part has great musical depth and (in my opinion) a seldom seen happy marriage between a acoustic guitar and electro drums.

It feels like a notepad of really good ideas but put together in a somewhat haphazard way, the arrangement could easily be changed to make it feel like a SONG though.

The hihat almost pierced my ears when coming from my K-Roks. I need to get a second listening system. Seriously.

Regards,
/Henrik, Luleå

I loved it...especially the breaks. The canned drums are probably called for in this track, but I'd go for a canned sound that wasn't as cheezy...electromagnatize the sound of that snare...something different...if its even just some 'on-beat slapbacks'...whatever...ya get the drift...and....the songs too friggin short.....

Mesh,

Awesome tune, wished it was longer though. I agree that those hats are panned excellently, I was thinking that maybe when you say "...the end-end-end...." on like the second line, some kind of doppler would be cool, kind of small idea. The vocals are really nice sounding on the whole, nice depeche feel. I don't see any problems with the canned drums, I think they got their point across. It maight jsut be me but it seems as though the acoustic kinda falls off every now and then, which kinda weakens the pace, again may just be me and these cheepo 'phones. Overall I really like this mesh, any plans for adding to it time-wise, I think it's worth it.

Mesh,

Pretty cool. I guess this is one of those short tunes. I liked it. The sorrow in the voice was cool too. More vox, more sorrow.

Yeah.. I noticed the high freq's when I listened to it in my Dynaudios, but on my Tannoys it's not a bit harsh...
The lack of depth is the sound I wanted... kind of an effect..
You're right about the kick.. it could use some presence at least..

This could be a good idea.. I'll try it when I mix down all the loops to one solid drumtrack.

As you've already pointed out the vocals need some attention, I feel the melody could probably be more inventive over this hypnotic chord sequence.

Vox will definitely get more attention.

I might add 30 secs at the end...
The vox are very processed, mainly because I don't like my voice...

A1A2:
The vocals are compressed, and I EQ-ed away the highs and the lows, then some delay.

BW and TR. Thanks. I appreciate it.

The bass is a bit hard to control on the Tannoys. They don't play all that much lows.

Nice atmospheric tune. I liked the guitars and the beats and the strange sounds, but mostly I liked the feel of it. About the beats: really sexy - either you have samples I don't have access to, or you know *way* more about Fruity than I do.

This technology is amazing - you're a guy with a guitar and a bass and some programs coming up with stuff like this. Good work.

Thx dobro.
The beat in the beginning is all the 808 that comes with Fruity Loops. The snare used later is in the Garage-kit that can be found on http://www.soundbank.web.services.hu

The strange sounds are all electric guitar though the Roland GP100 and some random Waves-plugins. (In case you don't mean my voice....)

Nice tune. Could you explain how you got the delay sound like that in the beginning with "I...."

Was it that waves stereo delay? What were the settings thanx

great job again...i dont think your voice is bad enuff that it NEEDS that much processing, but for this tune it fit PERFECTLY.....

i listened on a consumer stereo and the hihats are just a TAD too loud but not much........

its been awhile...wheres the rest of the vocals?.......

langleyt.. thx. it might be a bit longer when I get lyrics written...

V-Samantha. It is Waves 2-tap delay. I don't remember the settings. The I-I-I-I-I thing in the break is just copy/paste.

Gidgerino. I'll definitely finish up the vox on this one sooner or later. I'm getting more used to hearing my own voice.... hihats will go down a bit, bass also. Accoustic up a bit.. But what I really hope that I can get Henrik to add some analogue synthezisers to it... that'd rock..

Meshuggah,
very, very cool! I really liked this. It kind of reminds me a bit of Kent (Swedish band, yanks) when they were doing the b-sides to the Verkligen album. Check those songs out if you haven't heard them, very different from what Kent normally sound like.

Are you planning to add a chorus in the part that starts around 0:58 (where the tremolo guitar kicks in)? I can easily hear that happening. And I suppose you mean to add another verse after the first one?

So far I have only listened in headphones, so I can't really comment on sound quality and mixing. But in my cans it sounded great, including the hihats. I loved the panning synths. And that snare is about as wonderfully trashy as they get. I can agree that it would be nice to have kick a bit louder.

Just finish this song, it will be a killer.

Cheers
/Henrik

Dude, this is a really cool tune!

I'm not really into this type of music, but I found myself getting into this song. No major problems with the mix, I thought it was pretty damned good. Maybe a tad more low-end on the kick drum, that's all.
Loved that snare sound!
It sounds like a hammer hitting an anvil..... very nice!

Sounds nice! OK if you want constructive criticism here's all I can say:
Acoustic guitar doesn't sound too great. The sound is not very dynamic and low ends seem to share some other frequency or some shit. EQ? It's a low end thing on my shitty PC speakers here at work. If you were to EQ it a little so that thing is gone (that annoying freq low mids) and add a little verb to set it more in the room maybe...

Something I'm doing right now with a song I'm recording with an acoustic is recording two seperate acoustic tracks playing the exact same thing and panning them to opposite speakers/ EQ 'em alittle different. It really livens up a dull acoustic. Also, what are you using to record the acoustic? I've found a large diaphram condenser on the hole, and a dynamic mike on the fretboard close to the body sounds nice...

Really like the guitar effect and the vocals effect a lot!

The drums sound cheesy (sorry) Not sure how else to put it. IMHO when using drum loops or sequences you really have to do it in a way that is cool or inventive or else make them sound real. This is a really cool song concept and deserves cool drums. That's my number one beef with with musicians on this board is that a lot of peep treat drums as second class sounds, when in rock and pop music they share vocals with what's in your face.

Really liked this song though.

Henrik: Thx.. the beat is of course inspired by "Basriff" (best Kent-song ever IMO)..

Buck: Thanx.. I'll look at the kick.

Slack: thx

rats:
I have spent some time "mastering" the mix, and in a later version (only on my HDD as of yet), the guitar is a bit cleaner and more separated from the rest... I did an a/b, and I could clearly see your point. The acc is recorded by a MC012 card -> dbx576 pointed at 12th fret ~3-4 inches out, and another MC012 hypercard -> Mackie vlz pro, over my shoulder, pointing down to the right of the sound hole.

The drums are supposed to sound canned, and IMO they ARE cool and in your face.. the kick can come up a bit, and the hihats need some attention. Otherwise, I'm completely satisfied with how they turned out.

Thanks all for your time.

I just happened to have my POD hooked up to my SG while I was reviewing this piece. Ended up "reviewing" it about a dozen times before arming the track I was playing on in Vegas. Ended up with a pair of soft electric guitar tracks that I mixed with your mix and encoded at 128.... 1376 KB. I haven't posted it anywhere since it's your tune but it demonstrates a direction I think this piece should take FWIW.

If a mix moves me to pick up an axe AND hit the record button, you've done something seriously right. Thanks.
