soundproofing the 788

I've got my 788 (and cd bruner) about two feet from my mic-- tons of noise from the machine being picked up by the mic. BUT, I can't do vocals far from the 788 because I have to run the thing. Any ideas on how to built a soundproof box for the 788? With computer recording you can build a soundproof box for the tower, but of course I need to be able to push buttons. The noise is pretty bad, especially if you multiply it by 8 vocal tracks + mic'ed acoustic guitar.

Thanks for any ideas.

Can you use a punch pedal to start / stop recording?

I use a sustain pedal from my keyboard for that, its not picked up at all by my mics, since its one of those "mushy" feeling switches

I'm actually talking about the hum of the machine...not the noise of the pressing of buttons.

I'm planning on getting a 60 g hard drive that runs quieter along with the firmware upgrade, but currently I use non skid shelf liner underneath it and a pillow on top of it when the hard drive accessing starts to bother me. Don't cover up the vents.

You could put a gate on the mic, while tracking, i did this to get rid of my button pushing noise. or you could make a little wall (heavy blanket or something)between the machine and mic.
