Rockwool is made from rock! It is heated to a high temp and then sprayed against a flat surface to the required thickness. It is then cut into the different sizes. It is a very effective absorber and is more environmentally friendly than fibreglass.

It looks loke this:

Would you use it to replace any kind of normal insulation? Should I be looking for that instead of fiberglass

In OZ it's heaps cheaper, so I presume it is the same for you.
Yes - use it instead of fibreglass but you have to go to 4" I reckon. I've done studios in it and the carpenters prefer it to glass fibres. Dacron is their first choice so I use that if the budget will allow for it as its over twice the price. 2" Rigid is the best on the wall I think. It's absorption curves are the best whereas rockwool is the best in the cavities. Where you have to make the frame first, plaster it and then stand it up dacron is the easiest cos it comes in rolls but you can get rockwool in sheets.

cheers

Opa, um Brazuca na area? Entao é essa parada que parece um feno que esta na foto que John mandou?
Voce e' de onde cara?
Qual e' esse site que voce comentou?

Thanks for the picture John. What I plan to do is have double brick walls with 2" btw them but I'll have the same roof and floor for all the walls... I'll have a concrete roof and a lowered wood roof, probably with some insulation btw those also... I'll try to find out where I can buy the rockwool around here

I just ran across a pretty good document on some of the acoustic properties of rockwool in different wall configs. Check it out:

tried to find rockwool today....I called home depot and lowes. Neither of them have heard of it....When I told the guy at lowes what you said about it was and that they had it in australia, he said "those darn australians are always ahead of us"

Any ideas on other names for it?

Try this site. You can follow the links to distributors by country (although I don't know if I saw Brazil listed).
