Question Tascam 414 Headphone monitoring

Well, I tried the Tascam forum......hmmmmm.
If you follow the manual and arm a track L or R and hard pan thusly you only monitor the track in the assigned ear. Bogus, I feel like I'm listening to Sgt. Peppers.
I only record 1 track at a time so do you think it would work if I armed channel 1 to track 1 and so on and be able to hear in both ears ?
Dare I try ?
Bubinski.

I'm not toally familiar with the 414, I think I have the 424. But on mine htere is an option for "direct" or "L/R" for the input source for each recorded track. If you set it to "direct" then that audio from that input is routed to the same numbered track when you record. For instance, with all tracks in direct mode, when you record, input 1 is routed to track 1, input 4 is routed to track 4, etc. That's the way I always did my 4-track recording, unless I was bouncing or recording something like 4 mics to 2 tracks...
