How many "tracks" can a wave file have?
I am able to create a wave file with 8 tracks... or I should say from 8 tracks on my fostex. v-16 . I record the s/pdif signal with a soundblaster live with an optional optical-digital daughter card. If I pan right or left the wave file also will do the same... My multi-track recording software Powertracks pro audio recognizes the wave file is made of many tracks. It asks if it should convert the wave file to two tracks or a single mono track ... hmmmm, Will N-Track recording software recognize a wave file consisting of 8 tracks or more ? Or any software ? any help appreciated.
Thanks, Jim

You're out of luck son. There's no software that will break out tracks in the way you're discribing. If you want 8 tracks transfered from your outboard multi tracker you need a sound card with 8 inputs (be they 8 analog inputs or a single ADAT Lightpipe connection that can handle 8 digital channels at once). Now if you track straight to the computer a track or two at a time (which your sound card WILL allow you to do) You can multi track your brains out.

Yeah, that mix you're sending to the machine isn't 8 tracks anymore, it's two: stereo L & R.

I had that problem when I used to transfert 4 tracks thru my SPDIF. The thing I had to do is, transfert track#1 with track #2, then, retransfert track #1 with track #3, then transfert track #1 and track #4...
Then, I had just to "phase" all my tracks #1 to get back my 4 tracks digitaly transfered thru my SPDIF. I know, it is not the fastest way, but, with what you have, I think it is the only way. Good luck Pierre, Montreal, Canada
