C1 feedback

This C1 is my first condensor and I am sorta paranoid about how sensitive this thing is. I was not sure about how close to sing into the mike, so I wrote the Studio Projects guys about distance recommendations. They provide a windscreen with this mike about 1 inch thick but that seems a little close from what I have read about condensors.

Anyway here is the response I got back for any one interested. By the way, Alan responded this morning from a request last night so this customer was very appreciative and it says alot about their company that they responded so quickly.

Also, check out the other brand names they are associated with under the company name!

"Get a popper stopper, and do not use our windscreen. It is not really intended for normal use, and does reduce some high end frequencies. Proximity effect varies. The mic can handle everything you give it, so the distance will depend on the sound you are looking for. At 3" you get a bigger fuller sound, than you do at 6", 8", or 10". You will need to experiment with the proximity until you know what sound the mic will offer you at a specific distance."

Middleman, my preference is to be about 8-9" away from the C1.
My signal chain goes; C1 >mic pre>compressor>4 track.
By adjusting the compressor to the song material I can keep at
a set distance from the mike. YMMV as I don't have the best mike
technique having primarily acapella singing experience.
The various Joe Meek "V" model channel strips sound excellent
with this mike IMHO. An exterior pop filter is a must since it
also protects the mike capsule somewhat from moisture.

Cool

i prefer to be about 10 miles away from the c1 and about 6-9 inches from the Marshall MXLv67....sorry couldnt pass that up.....

of course for certain sounds 3 inches will work...depends on what you are after and the voice you are recording......

Very funny Gidge. I needed a good laugh.

Thanks for the feedback chessparov, any tips on where to pick up a popper stopper?

Talking

Gidge that was funny-you must be feeling better!

Middleman, you can either buy one for about $30 at a dealer
if you're a married guy like me or have significant other.
OR if you're single and on your first date you can ask her if
you can have her pantyhose! (get the metal coat hanger
separately) After you've explained it's all in the name of music
of course. Makes a great first impression......

One of the things I like about the C-1 is that it doesn't have as much proximity effect as my other mics. I'm usually about 6" away for vocals and sometimes closer for quiet passages and I sing into it about 30 degrees off axis into a popper stopper. Sooner or later you will tire of singing into pantyhose.

"Sooner or later you will tire of singing into pantyhose."

Now that conjures up all sorts of weird mental excursions.

Middleman,

Never thought of it that way, but now that I have, I think you'd still get burnt out. Hmmm, maybe this tread should move over to the dragon cave.

Here's how to attach that popscreen to your micstand.

Popscreen in one end, mic in the other end. Micstand in the middle. Besides, this thing (K&M model 23550) will prove very useful in many other app's (overheads...).

See attached pic.
