fostex x34 static

I have a fostex x34 4 track tape recorder. It worked fine until me and a friend hooked a mixer up to the first track. Ever since the first track has major static. Someone said I could have blown out the preamp. Any other possible problems there could be. Any help appreciated. thanks Matt
