How to read the FA compressor

I've been using the FA compressor, but I can't figure out how to read the graph. I understand how to customize the soft-knee aspect of it, but what do the X and Y axis represent exactly? What do the little lines that bounce around during processing represent. The instructions that come with it are worthless. Can anyone help?
