How do I record my Synth? (S80)

I have tried recording before to my DAW by just using the L/R stereo outputs with 1/4" cables into my mixer...and...that sounds fine...i guess. What I am wondering is if there is a better way?

More if I had a lot of sequencing setup. Like, a nice midi arrangement, that I was ready to turn into audio so that i could mix it and eq it etc. Do I just get it setup to play back through the Yamaha S80, and then record the 1/4" stereo outs?

Or is there a cleaner way to get MIDI to audio? Or..is everyone just using virtual instruments now...and just using the synth as a keyboard to input the notes? Just curious on whats the best way to do things these days. thanks.

I suspect you are doing what everyone else is doing. Yes virtual instruments are becoming more popular and more extensive but I'd keep at it.

The best way to do it is to play your sequence and record the individual instrument sounds to their own tracks. You will need to have your sequencer synced to the DAW. Sonar and Logic will handle the midi and the audio.

This way you can use compression and other software effects on the individual sounds and be able to have much greater control over the final mix. Another advantage is you dont have to worry about polyphony since the synth will only be playing one part at a time.
