Mackie CR1604-VLZ Direct Outs overdrive VM200 ins.

Anybody here ever team up a Mackie CR1604-VLZ and a Fostex VM200...or at least have some ideas on this:

At this point I feed only the vocals from the Mackie direct outs into the Fostex VM200. These direct outs are so hot that I have to turn the trims of the VM200 all of the way down to get any change. Even after this, it's easy to peak the VM200 meters with the vocal channel. The trim on the Mackie was set per specifications. If I back it down any, the band can't hear enough of the vocals when we record a practice.

I've considered running the vocals through the Compressor using it's insert, but using a mono plug to feed one channel of the compressor and feeding the other side to the input of my VM200, so that I can use it to bring down the outputs. I'm open to suggestions!
