24bit recording in Cool Edit

Hi All,

I hope to be picking up a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sometime this week. Thus, I will be making the jump from recording at 16 bit with my SB Live to 24 bit with my Audiophile. I am wondering, since Cool Edit does not give an option to record at 24 bit, and only gives the option of 32 bit, if i choose 32 bit will it still use the 24 bit recording of the Audiophile? Or, should I consider switching software...?

Thanks.

Milkman

camn is an unknown quantity at this point
you will be able to record your 24-bit line at 32 bit with no adverse effects whatsoever. And when you save your files, you can save them as 24 bit if you like.

The 32-bit thing is sweet actually - operating at that bitdepth is great for processing for example - the only drawback I know of is when you want to run a track (or session) from Cool out through an outboard device that only reads 24-bit files. Then you have to do the conversion that Camn mentioned first.
