A Perfect Circle's "sound"

I heard that billy howerdell(sp?) recorded the entire album in his garage totally digital, but do any of you out there have any tips on how to acheive their specific "sound"?

I know that's vague, but any help would be very....good. thanks.

Know what you do and have the right gear. Listen carefully and adjust if needed..... A bit vague but.....

Well, it was recorded via Protools, and then Maynard did the vocals on his own protools system at home. I think the sound is very scooped and not actaully that great on quite a few songs. I dont think the overall sound would be hard to imitate, aside from the fact that his guitar sound is huge, really huge and thick, naturally, so you'd need to have a guitar sound that big before you even tried to make it sound that way on tape. After you record everything, try scooping with a medium Q and sweeping the midrange and see if you find it. I'd like to see this stuff on a meter, to see where they sucked the life out at, and I'd proably add 2db or so there to make it sound better.

The perfect circle guitar sound is really nice. I would guess lots of layering and panning. I would guess they scooped out the mid mids bet 900 and 2k. Who knows. Im sure his garage doesnt look like most peoples. It was probably built or redone to be a studio, planned out acoustically, treated, etc.
The vocals in some places are really intimate like in the verse on "judith" and sound better than on alot maynards stuff with tool where the vocals are set back behind the music. Other than that I could believe he recorded most of those vocals at home. I always thought the low end on that record was really good, big and warm but detailed. In fact I used it for a while in referencing my own mixes.

It helps to remember that Billy was Billy Corgan's guitar tech as well as Adam Jones' tech. Both of those guys have great sounds, so obviously he knows something about guitar tones. Other than that I'd guess a Gibson guitar into a Mashall stack and several layers at that.
