Setup for Recording

Hello, I have a Tascam 788. I am going to record the drums, the guitar, and the vocals while I'm having another guy come in and do bass. Which is the best way to record and what should I record first??? Guitars first, Drums first? Also if I am using Two guitars, electric and acoustic, which one should I record first. I know their are many ways for doing this, but what is the best and successful way

Definitely drums first, plus whatever else you have the inputs/channels for....keep doing takes until you get the drum performance you want....having people play with him helps the groove, even if they arent going thru the recorder at the time.....

from there you can overdub the rest one at a time, even re-doing the basic tracks if needed......

ok, i see the 788 canm record 6 tracks simultaneously...how many will you be giving to the drums?.....

I am going to Run 6 mics through a Mackie and then take the output into 1 input on the Tascam. So 6 tracks on drums. As far as drums going first, I don't have a basis or idea for the guitar tracks though. I'll try and fiddle around with it

You shouldn't do it that way. You should run each of the 6 outputs from the mackie, into your tascam 788. So then you can have 6 seperate tracks.

do you find you are limiting yourself by recording to only 1 track for drums....you should do at least 2 tracks for stereo.....id record the drums to 6 tracks of the tascam (at least 4) and bounce to a 2 track stereo mix......that way you are not commiting yourself to a mix as soon as it hits tape (or disc)....to 1 track you may find the snare is just too loud (just an example) and already mixed, there is nothin you can do about it.....

just a suggestion...whatever works for you....

as far as the guitar, you can do what we call "scratch tracks"...just playing something, anything, to give the drummer a feel so he isnt there playing to nothing.....later on you just add the real part when you have it.....
