Let me preface by saying I don't like specialty kick drum mics. They're usually easier to get a tweaked sound on, but sometimes they're lousy at accurate sounds, and more importantly, I can't afford one-trick ponies in my mic closet.

I like the Beyer M-88 for kick (and vocals and electric guitar and . . . you get the idea), and you can often snag these new for $200. That leaves about enough budget for a pair of MXL 603s mics for overheads, at about $80 a pop. The other cheap option is the Behringer ECM-8000 omni's at $36 each, as you probably no from reading this forum.

Now, the one concern I'd have is that the M-88 is in some ways like an idealized SM-58, so it might be a bit close to what you're already working with. You might prefer a Sennheiser MD-421 for variety's sake (drums, guitar, bass, great for "problem vocals"), at around $300 new, maybe $250 used. This makes you choose the Behringers for overheads if you want to stay in budget.

I'd use the 57 you already have for snare, the 58 for snare bottom if you need it, and the 4033 as a room mic if you have a spare channel.

Hope that helps

Bear

Welcome, Bear, glad to see you around these parts... I've seen you on the other boards for a long time...
I was kind of thinking it would be nice to have another 4033 as dual overheads, but that leaves you a little short. I'll go with what was already said though... unless you want to try the 57 in the kick and use the 4033's down pretty close. You'll get tons of snare that way, too. Just an idea...

Cool

pair of Behringer ECM8000's on overheads....($70)

use the sm57 on snare

use the sm58 with the ball off on the kick to get the snap/click

use the 4033 a little out in front of the kick to get the boom

there you are...$70

now, for the phantom power part, what board do you have and what are you recording to?......depending on what you have, a different board may be in order.....

i tried the 4033 on the kick before and it was awful but that was inside the drum... i never thought to try a 2 mic approach to the kick

and i dont actually have a board i will just be running straight into vs880

is there some kind of desktop unit (2 channel ?) to power condenser mics?

or you can go $30 more and also get 2 channels of a pretty nice preamp...maybe even better than the pres on your VS unit

The Audix D-series.....

Nice alternative to the Sm57/ condensor method

(Not saying its a bad method... It is a very standard way.... I am only saying that the Audix D series are a nice alternative to that set-up...)

I should buy a second 4033. It's always usefull to have stereo setups for your mikes. this makes them much more versatile. Try and save for a decent kickdrum, like the shure beta52, or a secondhand EV RE20/27.

Kick-------->Beta52/RE20/27
Snare-----> SM57
Hihat------> Behringer?
OH---------> stereo 4033

I would go with an Audio-Technica Pro 25 on kick, Sm57 on snare, the 4033 as a room mic (if you need it...), and a pair of MXL 603s as overheads. I think you would be much happier with the MXLs rather than the Behringers as your overheads (it could depend on your room though.) That would leave you about $70 left which is almost enough to buy the audiobuddy that Gidge mentioned.
