Cd Barcodes

some one said that having a barcode on your cd can prove that the cd sells. How can you check up on this???
Say i have 300 cds and i sell/ consignment to record shops around the united states. Now 5 months latter i wonder if there sold or sitting in the record shop,(besides calling and saying how many copys do you have?) is there a way to check that they have been sold thru the having the Barcode???
Is it really worth paying extra to get a barcode?

I wouldn't pay for one.... Every Dupping Facility I've delt with offers them for free.... Of course it won't be your own..... But It's free....

If your cd is going to be released commercially, I reccomend getting the barcode on your cd regardless of whether you can look up sales amounts later on.....

In fact some stores won't sell cd's without the barcode... but hese are usually the larger chain stores like Tower Records....

The free ones will show the name of the Dupping facility and then your Band name will come up under that heading....

Sorry, this isn't exactly corresponding to your question, but I thought I would add what I do know about the subject

Soundscan

I've heard of a company called Soundscan that the pros use to track album sales, but also some industry people have mentioned to me that even unknown bands use this company to prove cd sales. The trick is to make sure that the retail stores you put your cds in use Soundscan. Major retailers usually do (i.e. Sam Goody), but the "underground"/"hole in the wall" stores don't always use soundscan. Try and get in good with the major retail store managers. Also try doing web searches for 'soundscan' and scrounge as much info as you can. this website at discmakers is a good start-www.discmakers.com/pdf/soundscan.pdf
