anybody with some experience with the rack model VSR880

and is 500$ a good price second hand (with effects an d hard drive?)

The VSR-880 is a great sounding and easy to use rack unit. $500 with the effects expansion card is not a bad price. The card alone is $250 new. I have seen the VSR-880 with a 6 meg hard drive priced at $425 without the card.

I use the VSR with 8 in and 8 out thru a Mackie board and love the flexibilty and the sound quality in MAS mode. It may be a little tedious to use the internal mixer with the jog wheel which is why I go thru the Mackie. That means I don't stay in the digital domain but I'm pleased. I mix the output directly to a CD burner.

The maximum useable hard drive space is 4 GB. Even with a 6 Gig drive, the VSR operating system can only use 4 x 1 gig partitions.

I recommend you go for it...!

You can find a new VSR-880 for $499 in the catalogs or web sites of Musician's Friend or American Musical supply. The new unit does not include the effects expansion card (VS8F-2). Those can be found on ebay.

If you already have outboard signal processing, you don't really need the card.

Rumor has it that Roland has discontinued the VSR-880 and dealers are blowing out the last of their supply. For a rack mounted hard disk recorder, it is the best buy.

over here in belgium, it's still 1000$ for a new one.. but I also noticed some dealers who want to get obviously rid of it.

And what the other buyer's concerned.. there's always people who give to much for second hand material I guess:-)
