Using Soundfonts in Acid 3 pro

Greetings.

I posted a question last month re: midi and Acid3 (pro btw) and got some great feedback. Thanks! Here's what I am doing now and the glitch I've run into.

I have been able to "record" midi into Acid using my SBLive card and it's soundfont sampler. I don't hear what I am playing while I am playing, however when I play back I see/hear what I played. The "moniter" box IS checked. When I am playing/recording I hear the other tracks just fine. What am I missing?

SECOND QUESTION:

Instead of recording midi with my SBLive, can I record the audio into Acid directly with my Live card? If so how?

When answering please keep in mind that I am real new to midi and using this Live card. In other words please be painfully obvious so that I get it. *smiles*

In Acid Pro 3, when you click RECORD, a dialog box pops up that has a level meter and two check boxes - one for Audio, one for MIDI. Just click the Audio box, then double check your levels BEFORE you hit the START button.

As long as you can see that some signal is being sent to to the meters, you'll be able to record.

If you don't see any motion in the meters, then you'll need to configure your sound card and/or Acid to record. Its not hard to do but may take a few tries to work out.

Thanks for the feed back. Here is what is confusing me, I can record Midi in acid using the sampler on the SB card BUT I hear nothing while I am recording it. I have a signal showing up on the VU's but no sound thru the speakers. I can hear what I recorded when I play it back. I can play and hear while in Cakewalk 8 both recording and playing back.

Does anyone have a list of settings for Windows/SBlive Audio HQ and Acid for recording Midi and Audio?

Also I get nothing in SoundForge 5. I'm just chomping at the bit to use my own sounds and music.

Do you hear sounds when you are NOT recording?

I'm just guessing here, as I'm a MIDIot. (NEVER used MIDI). Can you check the settings on your sound card's control panel/mixer? (Usually accessed by double clicking the little speaker icon in the tray.) Look around for advanced settings, and make sure that that playback channel (soft synth?) is not muted.

I can hear while I am playing the card when I am using Cakewalk or the Creative Soundfont player (which sucks btw) or in the SB AudioHQ. I will check everything again but if the softsynth was muted I wouldnt hear anything in the above mentioned applications. would I?

Is the softsynth enabled for playing but not for recording? That would cause what you last described. Check the Windows mixer. There are two places to enable it.

There is no option for recording or playback with anything relating to a synth in the Windows Volume Contol window on the computer I use for Audio recording. I just checked a different computer that doesnt have a SBlive card in it and it has "softsynth" as an option. HMMM.

How do I get a synth option in the Windows Volume Control window? Windows 98se btw.

I'm not sure how this would work... since the SB Live is addressing the softsynth as a MIDI device, but the actual playback goes through its audio stream...

Hmmm, on my laptop, which only has a software synth device, that device does not appear in the list of recording devices, only in playback. On my home PC with an SB Live, it shows the MIDI synth as a device in both places.

Sorry, I'm stumped.

On your computer with the SBlive what is the exact name that relates to the SBLive synth for record and playback?

In the Playback panel: MIDI

and in the Recording panel: MIDI

That's all it says in the Windows mixer. I gather the same balance and volume controls are applied to any of the SB Live MIDI devices -- SB Live Synth A and B, the WavSynth... is that all? I forget.
