Hi All,

The reason why my subject is a bit vague, it because I am not exactly sure what I am looking for. I am currently using a Mackie 1202VLZ Pro Mixer, with only 4 mic ports, and then some line-ins. However, the 4 mic ports is getting a bit limiting (since I can only record with 4 mics at a time). Is there any adapters or other cheap gear that will allow me to use more mics? I don't really want to buy a larger mixer. Thanks.

What you are looking for is a stand alone Mic preamp or Mic pre. There are about a dozen threads going on right now about them so if you look around a bit you will find a whole bunch of info. They range in price from about $100 up to several thousand $.
For about $500 you can get a Grace designs model 101, it's a single channel but it's sound has been described as stunning.
A lot of guys are recommending the Studio Projects mic pre, be careful, none of them have actually heard it! They are basing their assumption of it's quality on the fact that Studio Projects make the C1, which is a nice sounding Chinese made condenser microphone.

You may wanna decide how many more channels you want and how many $$$ you want to spend...standalone preamps are exactly what you want....

also, do you want more clean sounding pre's (like the Mackie) or something more colorful.......

i would like something still clean sounding, and have about $100-200 to spend...i would probably like about 2-4 additional channels

the DMP2 is a nice preamp..I have one myself....as good or better than the Mackie's pres....the Audio Buddy is the predecessor design of the DMP2, so it is not as great, but you can get more channels for your dollar.....Ive seen a few people here post on the Audio Buddy, and they say its a good clean preamp.....

maybe for your $200 (tops) you can get another 1202 off
Ebay or somewhere like that..... Or you can get those Shure line transformers for about $35 each to convert lo to hi impedence...but not really my choice of solutions. ....or a couple of ART tube MP pres...that outta keep you in your budget and be consistant with the rest of your setup. How come you don't want a larger mixer?.....like sell your 1202 and upgrade with the money from the sales and your $200 you can kick in. Unless you want "flavours" from different mic pres...that seems the best route...or another 1202, like I suggested earlier.
