traditional tab info

I'm getting into CEP's compressor. The graphic tab is cumbersome, I find, so I use the traditional tab instead.

Question: I can understand the use of compressing above a particular threshold and expanding below that threshold, but what's the point of settings for all those other thresholds?

Second question: has anbody here figured out the Attack/Release tab? I've gone through the help feature a few times, but I still don't get it. I know how to use an outboard compressor, but this feature of CEP leaves me in the dark. Why are there two different attack and release settings in CEP? Why not just one attack and release setting like with an outboard compressor?

Wink

ok, boss.. I ususally use SF's track compressor for this... but here goes...

Reply: I dont know what you are talking aboot. I only see "dynamics proccessor"??? But I still only use v.1.1 Is it different lately?

----------Question: I can understand the use of compressing above a particular threshold and expanding below that threshold, but what's the point of settings for all those other thresholds?

Answer: In this thing I see you can set MULTIPLE threshold values... usually you'd just use one... i.e. expand below -5db, compress above. With multiples you can do really cool stuff like...
expand a LOT below -20db...
expand some below -15
expand a LITTLE below -10
FLAT from -10 to -8
COMPRESS a touch from -8 to -6..
COMPRESS A BUTT LOAD above -6!

making a NICE smooth compression curve.

-----------------Second question: has anbody here figured out the Attack/Release tab?

yes

one is for the attack/release BEFORE the compressor... one is for AFTER the compressor.

-------------- Why not just one attack and release setting like with an outboard compressor?

cuz outboard compressors arent very flexible. With @ I can take something with a LOUD noise floor... do a quick attack/slow release drop to a silent noise floor (...well... almost silent) then compress my resulting signal in 4 different ways... THEN have a slow atteck/ quick release jump back up to good volume.

ALL IN ONE PROCESS!!!

jeezus, the majesty!

Yeah - version 1.2's got four 'tabs' in the dynamics processor - graphic tab (point, click, drag), traditional tab (numerical settings for ratio and threshold), attack/release tab (the confusing one with two attack and two release settings), and a band limiting tab (frequency range).

I understand what you're saying about the value of multiple thresholds - it's fine tuning, and a smoother curve.

But I still don't get the double attack and release settings. CEP processes a given signal twice - why? One reason I don't understand what you said about that is because I don't understand the relation between attack/release and noise floors. How does that work?

<snip>-----------------

man, I just wrote some shit.. and now IM confused. SO forget that one.
]

Picture this:

An outboard comp is a little man sitting w/ a fader, cutting the loud and boosting the soft, right?

So this is a TEAM of little guys...
one on the TRIM (input gain..attack being how fast he STARTS to turn the knob.. release being how fast he STOPs
one on the fader...(or series of faders for different threshholds...)
and one on the master bus(again, attack how fast he STARTS the slide... release how fast he STOPS)

Forget about the noise floor.

attack /release makes things sound a little more natural. If it jus SNAPPED to a certain volume... it would sound way digi. = bad.

------------

FREQUENCY RANGE???

I will upgrade immediately. 1.2 always crashed my old comp, tho.

Freq range SHOULD let you ONLY COMPRESS certain freqs~!!!

Like if you have a REALLY bassy track in PARTS! but fine other places.. you can just COMPRESS the low wnd... and it wont sound weird, like if you try and EQ out the lows ONLY IN PARTS...it'll sound GOOD.

xoxo

ps.. I think Im more confused than ever, now. Just tweak settings... you will understand.!
