Just updated to Cubase 5.1r1

It's a win. It's a real production-ready, solid, usable release. I upgraded from V5r6, and I had _zero_ problems: it took all of 10 minutes, and all features I needed for all of my existing work were there for me with no drama, first try. IMNSHO, it's worth it just for the "datube" plugin- and there's other new stuff there if you use VST instruments, which I don't.

Also, if you have a midex8, check out the 1.5 midex8 drivers: they have real, honest-to-Gawd multiclient support. I can finally get SoundDiver and Cubase to work together now. Major joy... However, upgrading to them is _not_ transparent (as the above upgrade is): you have to redo your instrument setups, as Steinberg changed the port names from Midex to Midex8 (to allow for the new Midex3, apparently). Painful, but still worth it for the multiclient support.

If you're a mac person, you'll need to fish around a tad bit more. But the 5.1 upgrade has made me a lot happier with Cubase: I just spent the evening beating on it with no hiccups whatsoever...

Hey Skippy,

I have a problem - perhaps you can help. Let me forewarn you: I am not too knowledgable about PC's.

I downloaded the 5.1 update last night. I followed the instructions on the web site and put all files into the same folder and then ran the .exe program.

The install wizard starts up with no problem and asks all the pertinent questions. Then, about 2 or 3 minutes into the install, I get a dialog box asking me to insert disk #2 into my floppy drive.
Um, I don't have a disk #2, WTF??? So, right below that, it offers a file path to type in, but not to choose from- I tried to direct it to the second file download, and it doesn't allow enough space to type in the entire long ass file name AND it has no "browse" option for the file path. So I am stuck there - I have the first part of the update, but not files 2-8 - I have them on my hard drive, but I can't access them.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance to you or anybody that can help me.

P.S. Keep in mind, I am not very good with computers, so please keep terms as simple as possible. If you start telling me how I need to re-route my flux capacitor to my giga cache after I boot the master primary to the secondary slave and then adjust the dipswitches in my BIOS, I will be sadly lost.

I am getting the same error message Brad- I hope sopmeone can answer our questions. The files are too big to go on a floppy @ 4 megs a pop, and I did like you said and put them all in the same folder. Hmmm. Maybe we can buy the upgrade disk (though I think they should issue it upon request for those of us non cable- non DSL users) from Steinberg.net. Hmmm.

Shoot. I should have mentioned that. The download from Steinberg mislabels 7 of the 8 files in a really braindead way. If you go to the directory where you dumped them, and view details, you'll see that they are named things like "<something>.WO2..WO2"

They are _supposed_ to be named simply "<something>.WO2", and so on. The additional extension that is getting glued on when you downloaded them is what is causing your problems- the installer can't find them. Simply rename those seven files to remove the redundant "..WOx", and the installer will work very well.

Sorry about that: I'd read about that on the Steinberg site, did it on mine before I even tried the installer, and it completely slipped my mind to mention it in my writeup. Hopefully their Web folks will fix that _muy pronto_, because it's just a typist's error...

Don't lose hope. Once you do that, it should go smoothly.

I haven't tried it yet, won't be able to until later tonight - but that sounds like a winner - I did notice those extra .WO2 - .WO8 tags, but I didn't attempt to change them.

Removed those extra file extensions and BAM! Installed with no problem! Hopefully thehorseshoe saw that post and was able to install as well.

Now skip, you seem pretty familiar with Cubase and the new features. Aside from new VST instruments (which I don't use either) and a few new plug ins, what did they add? I guess some bugs were ironed out, eh? Like you, I didn't have many problems prior to the update. Then again, I have yet to use all of the features, so some of the stuff that will be new to me has probably been there all along

I dig the new logo, too.

Apparently, this version is actually v5r7pb5 renamed, with a new splash screen and the new plugins. So it is primarily the latest/greatest bugfix release, rolled up and renamed into a new major version.

They used to have a complete version history of all the public betas on the Steinberg FTP site. But when they put out 5.1, they wiped out all the old 5.0 PB folders, and along with them the version history files. You can get a good feel for it by reading through the public beta forum and public beta lounge, though:

Some of the new plugins are freely available, sure- and I can't comment on the new instruments, because I don't use any of them. However, for my personal working style, 5.1 is a clear win over the 5.0pb releases- it is more stable, and stability is key for me. There have been a very large number of bugfixes incorporated in this release. Feel free to look through the links I provided above. The bugfixes alone (with respect to the V5 public betas that I started with) are worth the price of admission, which is *free*.

I don't know what version of Cubase you started with, so I don't know the basis for your disappointment. I do have a hard time understanding why you'd slag this off. If giving away an upgrade/bugfix release of this magnitude makes them "unprofessional", then sign me up!

Thanks for the info guys. Perfect. As for it being unprofessional, I have to totally disagree. Cubase is absolutely the finest software (as well as wavelab) I have ever owned or even seen. If you don't want it, please give it to me. I will gladly pay the shipping!

yeah ! I just got this and it is great. Alot smoother, less click problems and that stereo wideness plugin is just what i needed. the Da Tube thing would be good I guess if you trakced some really thin crap. other then that its too aggresive. still cool though. Im sure I will use it eventually


I also noticied I have more CPU power available with quite a few plug-ins versus what I got in 5.0
