Question ps5's, 20/20's and RODE NT2/NTK

Howdy Y'all,
(that's how people say hello where I'm from, Austin). I just picked up a set of Event PS5's, my first studio monitors. They are powered and have a 5.14" driver and 3/4" tweeter. So far I'm not sure if I like them. I did my first mix on them, got it sounding really nice, burned to CD and my mix sounded horrible on evey thing elese. Then I played a production CD thru them and it sounded very bright and lacked bass. The CD I burned had (of course) too much bass, the guitars got lost, and was hollow sounding. Any one have any experiences with these things. I'm thinking of taking them back and getting an Alesis Pwr amp and the 20/20's, Tannoy Reveals, or the M1MKII Actives. Any thoghts? Also, I'm looking to get a nice condenser mic to record vocals with. Thinking about the RODE NT2 or NTK. My preamp is just a TUBE MP going thru a 3630 Compressor and into a Roland VSR-880. My vocal style is pretty smooth with the occasional belting and screaming. Thaks so much.

Jason

You should have done that first!

Before you start mixing you have to 'learn' your monitors, ie learn how a good mix (commercial album) sounds on them...
It's good also to use a commercial record as a reference while you mix.

About your setup, I believe its important to have a 'balanced' recording chain. It's no use looking into a mid-priced mic if you don't have a preamp/converters that will do it justice. It's like putting a Neumann mic into a Fisher-Price recorder! (ok I might be exaggerating a bit)

Hey Jason. Did you replace these monitors with different speakers and a sub? I replaced a pair of fostex sattelites and a sub with the event ps6's and had the same problem your having. I guess i was spoiled with the sub..(having the nice low end under my feet) These p36's sounded tinny, too bright and lacking in the bass area. After using them for awhile..and learning them, I can now make better mixes with them. Although it took awhile getting used to not having the subsonic rumble under my desk.
