noise gate on kick

Anyone tried a noise gate on a kick drum? I'm tired of having others drums come threw on the kick track. I use either a Senn 421 or a Beta 52 on the kick, into a ART PRO VLA into the console then the ADAT'S. I've tried gating the snare also. I'm trying to get a little more control.

Sure! Just get your threshold, attack and release right so that you don't lose any of the kick parts... it'll work fine.

Some people will throw a blanket over the kick to tame some of the leakage.

Phil Collins was famous for gating his drums. One of his tricks was to have a distant gated mike in addition to the close mike when recording in a large acoustic space. It made his kick sound huge.

Before a gate, I would try for better placement of the mic. I personally dont use gates at all. What kind of leakage are you getting? Why not make it work for you?

problems

Well,my problems are too much sound other than the kick comming threw. This is only a problem is someone wants to use say,my dm5 drum unit. I try to run a patch from the kick channel to trigger the sampled kick. I get false triggers at times.Ive used a gate to reduce the ring on toms and to get rid of unwanted hihat on the snare track, For snare now I try to mic right under the hihat, trying be as oposite the hihat as I can.

?????

its all trial and error....if your original signal is good then it will be easier than if you original signal is weak...try mixing it without a gate and if really need one..set the level so low that you can hear everything being picked up and just edge the gate in so it slowyly starts to remove the other parts of the kit..dont use excessive gating or you'll lose all the feel of the kick.
