vf-16 cdr

does anybody know if the cdr on the vf-16 is good for recording data, and not just for audio mixdown??

I have had the vf16 for about two weeks. I don't know if I fully understand your question. The vf16 does not come with a cdr. Fostex recommends a specific Plextor SCSI CDR/RW for the vf16. By 'data' I assume you mean data about the mix, such as the saved scenes, fader settings, EQ settings, FX settings etc. My understanding the recommended SCSI Plextor will record this data along with the audio mix down. I purchased a Fostex CR300 CDR/RW, which may have been a mistake for backups. It's great for basic CD burning. It connects via XLR, rca analog, coxial digital, S/P-DIF digital. Using the S/P-DIF (optical) I can back up the individual tracks from the vf16 to CDRW. Only drawbacks are, it only stores 2 tracks at a time with a minimum of 8 tracks whether full or empty. This means a 5 minute song will take about 20 minutes to back up and it is just audio, no data. Keep in mind have only had this unit for about 2 weeks but this is what I know so far. The manual sucks big time.

I suspect that the question addresses a new Fostex model with built in cdrw.

The new VF-160 with the built in CD-RW drive (shipping this next week, I believe) is basically a VF16 with the newest software and a CD-RW drive. The drive can be used for either burning a finished mix, or for storing hard drive data to use as a back-up, or for freeing hard disk room. Hope your question is answered.
