Unhappy Fostex X-14

so i use a fostex 4 tracker to record my stuff. i use a pre-amp sometimes before the mic input on the cassette recording tracker. but either way, i hear hiss and fuzz outs in my headphones when recording. what i hear in the headphones isn't what records. it's really annoying that i can't adjust the levels of what i hear while i'm recording. any advice?

You need to be using monitors to help choose your sounds.... headphones are useless for judging timbre and tone of instruments.

Get yourself a decent pair of studio monitors....

If you're on a budget take a look at Yorkville YSM-1s...........

monitors...

that's a good suggestion... but won't the microphones pick up sound from the monitors when multitracking? what techniques are used to avoid that? how do drums get recorded with this technique? thank you

You use the monitors to make decisions about timbre and tone... you track using headphones once you've decided on the sound....
