still more questions-skip in audio

i recorded about 3-4 minutes worth of material on 8 tracks and got a skip in the audio can someone suggest any reason why there would be a skip? i have EVERYTHING that could be running in the backround of the computer off completely everything is new about the computer, motherboard, HD, RAM, and processor. There's also next to nothing on the hard drive. I think it may have to do with the various buffers and such but i'm not sure.. it only happened once but can get quite annoying if you really nail the drum take...


also.. still can't route the audio out of cubase into the motu 2408 and back in to the digital board(via tascam Tdif) i'll take whatever you got!! thanks so much

Sounds alot like a buffer or general sound card failiure...
In cubase you set up the buffer like this:

Options - Audio Setup - System
Check out if you can choose different devices in "ASIO Device"... Choose the one with least latency.
In Asio Control Panel, you have options for both your Recording And Playback Device. You'll see a little square called "Buffer Size" in both. You can click the number underneath to change it.
The bigger the size the less skips and clicks but more latency.

Sounds like you need to make either your recording or playback buffer a bit bigger

But: Stuff like screensavers and stupid things like that can also cause clicks... but you say you have nothing running...

I'm running an HP with the same processor speed & 256 ram. I have my ASIO buffers set to 800 samples per buffer, which gives me about 18ms of delay at 44khz. This setting is somewhat modest, but I can always get through a multi-track project with no problems. I have cubase set to "Global Disable", which means no internal monitoring will occur within cubase while recording. I monitor from my Delta66 control panel.

For my computer--when I run msconfig, & look under the startup tab, I have only one option selected "systray". This means that for the most part, the only things running behind the scenes are "explorer & systray". I downloaded a very small program called "PView" from CNet.com which gives me a much better understanding of what is running in the background of my computer. It also has a "kill" procedure which will allow you to dump stuff that you don;t want running during a session. Be careful though, if you kill something needed you will likely crash your puter.
I have turned off my "active desktop" (no fancy desktop for me). I run scandisk & disc defragment on a very regular basis.

Free up as much memory as possible before starting a project. I always shut down my computer & restart before doing anything major in cubase.

I can't help with your probs of routing your audio--I have my own routing problems to contend with. Alas though, that is a future post.
