Is there a site where I can find the mics and preamps used by some of my favorite singers.

I have seen a dat-digest or something, where they mention the signal path, but they dont mention the mics used.

btw,
if anybody knows what mic Andrea Bocelli uses or the mic that elvis used, I would be obliged.

The Telefunken U47 and U48 were both allaround general purpose mics in the 60s...seems like they used it on everything. Although the Shure 55 seems like what usually comes to mind when I think of an "Elvis mic".

issue to make one more run. I've looked around the web for
facts on which microphones are used by singers I like - no
luck.

My favorite singer (Steve Hogarth) used a Shure Beta58 and Focusrite Red preamp on his last two albums, instead of the AKG C 12 he used to use. There goes the myth of that you need a $3,000 Neumann or Elam. Maybe talent is more important than having a great mic. Maybe an expensive preamp is important....I don't know.

ive been wondering this myself lately as im looking to update to a better mic and preamp, but ive had no luck either finding out the information. i emailed one studio that recorded part of u2's new cd because i liked the vocal sound of some of the songs... no response yet.

Thanks wide awake. That's reason enough for me to
buy his albums (I take it you mean his solo-albums).
Even though I'm mainly a Fish-man when it comes to
Marillion.

Buck62: Yes, valid suggestion. And it do provide some
insight. But the problem with endorsement lists is that
you cant be to certain that the artist really use the
product, when they used them and for what. So all you
end up with is that they aren't to ashamed to get their
named displayed next to the company logo.

Actually, I did mean the last two Marillion albums "Anoraknophobia" and " marillion.com". His solo album was called "Ice Cream Genius" and it was decent but not as good as the Marillion CD's in my opinion. It leans towards his synth-pop roots, and away from the progessive rock influences.

I don't know of a site like that. If you go to some of the producers forums, you can lurk and see what they have been using.

Going to a manufacturers website to look at the endorsements does not mean they use the mics...it means they endorse it. By that, they have been either paid, or given product for the use of their photo and quotes, so companies like Shure, AKG, and many others give their mics away all the time to get people to say they use them. SOme do, many don't.

If an artist, producer, reviewer or other celebrity has paid for the product, then you know they use it.

If you checked out the Shure link I posted, it names the artist, which mic (or mics) they are using, and the application of the mic (vocals, drums, guitar cab's, wind instruments, etc.).

I doubt they would do that if they couldn't back it up, possibly risking a lawsuit.

Shure makes some great mics, and I have no doubt that the list of well-known artists using their mics could easily be much bigger.

Where's the list of famous artists who use your mic, Alan?

I was annoyed by the Shure website, because some of the artists' applications listed were really intended for stage use, and not studio...

Ah, yes, sorry about that Buck62. I was so sure about
having seen the shure list recently that I didn't bother
checking it out (like I said, I've searched around a while).
It really is much more useful than I expected. Nice that
you could click your favorite artists and get it from
that perspective.
It still would be nice to have the when (stage or studio,
album and song) and of course some other brands. But
Shure both have the enough artists using them and
enough different products to make the page interesting,
so I'll check it out carefully.
