issues with cool edit

My cool edit pro will not accept audio from the soundcard's line-in, nor will it accept anything from the cd-rom drive. However, if I send signal into the mic input via my handy volume controlled headphone jack on my external tascam cd burner, it will work, but of course, that only gives me a mono signal. Ive tried dumping and re-insntalling cool edit to no avail. Doth anyone have any suggestions? Is this a soundcard issue? Is it a software issue? Is it operator error?...

This would be easier to answer if you listed your soundcard make and model and your OS, and what exactly you are trying to record.

The soundcard is Creative Labs Sound Blaster 32.....(Im quite ignorant of soundcards in general, so I am not aware of it's reliability)...Am I right in saying that I should be able to feed any stereo, line-level signal into my soundcard (line in, of course) via the 1/8 trs jack? and also...I should be able to drop an audio cd in the tray and control it via cool edit, record the stereo waves, and edit as I please.....right? This is the reason that I didn't feel like I could isolate the problem to the soundcard....I am not really sure...Point me in any helpful direction...Id be grateful and I'd sing your praises for years to come....and please pardon any ignorance that may leak from my words....

I think i've said this many many times (sorry) but....
Only the "mike in" has a preamp. the line in doesn't.
get a preamp
get another preamp
and get a spare preamp ?

The line in is for line level signals only. Plug a mike into the line in and it won't work. Plug a mike into a preamp, "then" into the line in and it will work.

Right, it should be able to record from your cd drive though.

You need to go to the Volume console in your sys tray and go to preferences, then choose Recording.
Choose either CDaudio or Digital (I don't think sb32 got a functional digital cd line though). On a sound blaster card, you have to start the recording of the track before you start the track itself. Don't ask me why. stooopid crative labs, get a hoontech hehe.

If you haven't opened the volume control in windows before you tried to record to the line in (choose "Line" in Preferences - Recording) then that's probably the issue..

And Pap is quite right, try and record a mic from line in and you're gonna expect 99% noise and 1% audio.

god, its like, newbies tripping over eachother in here.

Scott..you couldnt have said it that many times in 9 posts... and if you read in a glancing, paraphrasing manner, youll notice the interloper is trying to send a line-level signal into his line in. Try not to confuse him! This is EXACTLY what he should be doing!

that said..

interloper.

You are right about the line level thingy.. About the CD.. you're right in THEORY. Ive never been able to do it, however. But Ive never tried that hard.

SO.. your line in issue...do you get silence? Or does CEP say "no specified device" or something? Does it work thru your SOUNDCARD'S (NOT your burners) MIC in??

and... drum roll....

what are your DEVICE SETTINGS in CEP? Under options.

??

xoxo

ps.. scott.. dont get mad, im just that way

First off, thank you camn for noticing that I was not confusing my line levels with mic levels. The reason I ran into mic in on the soundcard was to see if it was working properly. I ran a line level signal into it only by way of a headphone output because it had a level control of it's own, and it could help me narrow the problem. The advise on starting the record mode before the audio CD in the tray was helpful and definately helped isolate the problem. That worked, and I know that all windows and cep settings are how they should be. What I can deduct now is that since I can pull audio from the audio cd in the tray, and mic level signal, then my line in on the soundcard has to be screwed. Hopefully, it's along the line of a broken solder joint. And the fact that I hear, and see on my record meters, a low constant distortion when in record mode, makes it seem at least a little more plausible...Whaddya think? Thanks again everyone...

PS...one real novice type question....Can I open audio that exists in the form of MP3 in cep? Or do I have to convert it to a wav file, or will it do that for me?

The big question is... do you hear any sound coming from the line in, to the audio output of your soundcard? If so, then record directely from the audio output till you get the line problem fixed.

Yeah, cep can open mp3 files, but remember this: Every time you change (even just delete) some of the mp3, cep will compress it again when you save it. This could end up in some real bad audio quality.
My advice is never to use mp3's for more than 1 (one hehe) compression. The next time you want something from that mp3, select "Save Selection" or "Save As" and make it a wav.

Sorry mate, i'm just a dumb shit musician / animator.
and I thank you for correcting my inappropriate answer!
I definitely learn heaps from all of you.
Think I'll stick to what I do best.
Cooledit Pro is such an amazing program, I love it!
I know this is not the place for it, but if you want to hear one of my cooledit pro mixes go to:
www.feel-rock.com and download "The Roses & The Wine"

ps.. camm.. its ok, I'm not mad, just really into it.

Interloper.. Last thing possible you can do.. In CEP, go to Preferences and Devices and try and change the wave input. That's really the last advice I can give at the moment when I'm not sitting with the pc myself. It seems like you're not the only Creative SB user that has this problem...

Cool What Cool Edit is Best?

I am a novice digital recorder. Will the $69.00 Cool Edit program get the job done, or is Cool Edit Pro that much of a Leap. I have free Pro tools but it delays vocals and Cool Edit Pro Demo won't let you save. I am ready for a real program that works. I sthere anything free? How about ACid DJ software is it any good. Which is best. Thanks in advance for answering this general question. Later.

Let's see, you want something that's more or less free, and that does just about everything, right? Hang on, lemme check my list here a minute.....nope, nothing like that. Just as I thought! You have to pay for the good stuff! Same old story.

Never mind. Check out n-Track. It's cheap and good and will get you tracking.
