I figure why drag mine out if the Rhode is rated higher here at the site, but your right, why take any of these guys word for it. And as far as shootouts go its only as good as the sound system I am listening to.

Wink

Rode NT1-less harsh more filling! (The AKG C3000B is nicer than the NT1
though) Laying off any high EQ usually works better on the NT1 too.
Although YMMV.

Now that there is a definitive answer here I am comfortable knowing which one to use.

Cool

I still say use both.....EQ and compress the hell out of one of them and leave the other completely flat......blend for desired effect.......

Talking

That's a great idea Gidge-so I'm going to steal it! If I steal enough ideas
it becomes "research". (I'd suggest compressing the AKG C3000 still...)

Question Less harsh vs. nicer?

Chessparov

You say the NT-1 is less harsh, yet the 3000 is nicer? Sounds conflicting to me. I think I can figure out "less harsh", but then what the heck does "nicer" mean?

cardiod, sorry if I wasn't clear. The AKG C3000 and the AKGC3000B
(later model-further refined) sound very different. The C3000B has a
nice tone, especially for female singers (generally).
The Rode NT1 sounded like a good "rock" mike as it has a lot of presence
I sold the Rode to get a nice omni-Audio-Technica AT3527 (discontinued),
and the AKG C3000B to upgrade to the Studio Projects C1.

Question So - Chessparov - how do they compare?

I had the opportunity to get a 3527 when they closed them out, but I got cold feet and passed on it. Oh,well. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Story of my life. Anyway, the mics you have mentioned are all mics I've been considering, so - could you give me a brief description of how they compare with each other? What are the relative strengths and weaknesses of each. I realize this will just be your opinion, as are all comments on this board, but at least this will be coming from someone who actually HAD the mics, and isn't just repeating what they've read somewhere. Do you think the C1 is better for most male rock vocals than the NT-1? I'm primarily interested in something for kind of rough male vocals, acoustic guitar, maybe somewhat distant room ambience for electric guitar, eventually drum overheads, and it would be REALLY great if any of these were passable at picking up acoustic upright bass. Can you tell I'm trying to get by on a shoestring for now? Sorry, I'm babbling again. I know a lot of this has been covered before, but I wanted to hear YOUR opinions and add them to the pile.

cardiod, the C1 is in a higher class than the Rode NT1.
Having said that, if you check out www.studioprojectsusa and the thread
I started recently on the B series from Studio Projects you will learn some
good information. The B1 will have a list price of about $100!!!!
It's supposed to come out early next year and I bet it will be better than
the NT1 also. You could use the $ saved to put towards a compressor and/
or a mic pre if needed.

Here are some comments about the other mikes;

Audio-Technica at3527-nice warm omni good for close miking-I use it to
record vocal quartets
AKG C3000B-pleasant tone for male pop vocals, the "presence" dip in the
mid-range made it not the best choice on my voice for rock
AKG C3000-The local studio owner that I sold my C3000B to claimed the
original C3000 was very harsh (seconded by other sources)

P.S. The VT-1 mic pre is coming out soon too, check out the above website.
Do you have a decent mike you can use until this stuff comes out?

dragonworks,

Here's a thread that I posted that compares the AKG C3000 to the RODE NTK.

http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthr...threadid=36359

I know it's the NT-1 you wanted to compare to, but at least you'll get an idea of how the C3000 does on vocals.
