It was quite good. The vocals were nice. I like that part around .55 even though I dont know what technique it is.

THe guitar sounds a bit hard, as if it was close miced. I was wanting to hear more room.

The vocal sounds a bit fluffy. This works great for some songs, but I would have liked a real sound on this one. FOr an example, listen to ruebarb's latest post.

Can you share what mic you used on the vocal and what eq settings you have on it.

The clarity and space of the piece is good. What I like best about the song is the song itself. Very nice.

All will be revealed in good time. In the meantime, do you remember the original deal? I post three songs, and you try to spot the music that was recorded at 16/44 instead of 24/48.

It's difficult, as they're in mp3 format. In one way, I'm hoping you can't spot it, because that will say a lot about the levelling effect that dithering down to 16/44 has, not to mention mp3 conversion. On the other hand, I'm hoping you can nail it, because that would mean that high resolution is discernible even after it's been dumbed down twice.

Cool Dobro. I find the vocal stuff a bit weird in parts, but I think I said that about the last song you posted ages ago... Not that its weird, just that vocal-like-an-instrument thing... never dug it much for pop/rock, although the part at 00:52 is funky. I like the song, cool melodies, interesting changes, slowdowns and pickups.

I'd like to hear some more filler though, another guitar or something. Maybe some reverb on the vocals and pan the guitar somewhere else. Less crickets on this one too, got the population under control?

Cyan - comparing ruebarb's guitar and voice track to my own, the biggest difference seems to be EQ and reverb. He's probably doubled tracks as well, but what do I know?

Thanks, Emeric. Reverb's a good idea. As for panning - when I panned the voice and guitar enough to notice it, it didn't sound natural - they were too far apart. Making a clone of the guitar track and then splitting the two tracks left and right didn't work either because of the voice spill on the guitar track - everything I applied to either guitar track got applied to the voice and made it weird. I've either got to change the way I record (do guitar and voice separately), or add other parts to the song. I've opted for the latter on what I'm doing now because I like playing and singing at the same time.

Don't worry these responses are to be expected

The vocals are *absolutely* excellent style-wise. They could have benefited from a little bit of compression...or maybe they could have just come up more against the guitar, because the level was sort of all over the place enough to make the words difficult to understand at times.

This is like Ian Anderson meets Leon Redbone. I think it's almost brilliant in its simplicity. The length was perfect...I hate songs that wear themselves out.

The guitar sounded pretty good...although it sounded a tad nylon, which is good if it is nylon You might have added a bit of subtle reverb....not for some big warehouse effect...just to give it some room. All in all it sounds natural enough though. I only critique it because that's where we are. Panning the guitar would make sense if you were elastic man An externalizer or stereo effect over the whole piece however might make it sound more full. Don't really see much need for it though, it's one guy with one guitar. He's in a room, he is not elastic man. It should be mono.

I guess the reason I like this song is that's NOT THE SAME OLD REHASH. It's got flavor. I like flavor.

My only complaint(s) were the vocals sounded a little too thin and a la Ian Anderson, some other picking parts might've helped.
I can't really comment on the whole 16/24 comparison, as I'm still recording on a 16 bit card, but your breathing was picked up quite well. If that intimate a sound is what you were going for, you certainly got it.

And I did like that rendition of kazoo/trombone/scat singing.

Slack - considerate and well-considered comments, thanks. I was wondering about both compression and reverb. One reason I put it up here was to see if anyone would pick up on it. If I don't fish for it, but someone notices it, then it's an issue. And yeah, it's a nylon-string. The sound's not as funky as steel-string, but I just love playing it.

doc - I think you're right about the vocals lacking fullness. I think I'll get into shades of reverb on what I'm doing these days. I'm glad you liked the lip trumpet - I love doing it, but only about half the people who hear it like it. I need a violinist.

hey, dobro. figured i'd return the favor...

very different style than what I'm used to (needless to say), but very cool in its uniqueness. production-wise, there's not much to say (with such minimal instrumentation), but I'm impressed with how clean the tracking is. both the vox and the guitar are up front and crystal clear without any ambient (or electrical) noise. perhaps I'm just used to overdriving everything , but this was refreshingly clean and original. sorry to say I have no suggestions, other than to share your vocal recording tips keep it up.
