Well, my initial idea was to suggest uninstalling ms messenger, but then I started thinking about how someone such as yourself might get so much out of msm that it contributed to recording in CEP in a kind of knockon effect kind of way.

Okay, let's open this up.

My first question's personal and flippant. Why is that 8 minutes in CEP isn't enough? What are you up to?

My second question's this: I've heard of partioning one's hard drive, so that various functions operate independently of each other. Have you heard about this, have you already done it, and if not, would you like to learn more, etc? I'm not one of them, but there are people here who can talk you through this if it would help.

partitioning is a good idea. for example, I have messenger running off one partition and cool edit off another. what os are you using? how much RAM do you have? sometimes one little program running in the background can make the difference...but running programs like cool edit off different partitions is a good idea

Right... funky thing is. I don't even have to have MSM running for this to occur... But since day one i installed it, coolpro has totally went stiff at 8.22 min... ?????
I need alot of time, cause I record my dj mixes on my computer and the tracks I make are sometimes longer than 8 minutes (progressive house)

Still maybe partioning could work out, running ce dedicated on one part, cause MSM might just be the last drop... but how to do...?

I run win98 on an AMDk6-2 450mhz with 192 mb ram. Hoontech digital soundcard.

I'm trying my best to keep as little as possible running in the background.

now... You probly wont like this suggestion.. but here goes.

usually if I have a problem.. I just reinstall CEP, right on top of the old one, and it cures it. But if it doesnt....

Id do a clean reinstall. This is too weird to be a regular old incompatability problem.. besides, plenty of peeps run both those progs together... odds are that shit has just built up to the point that it cant hang anymore.

DO you have 2 hard drives?? Ideally, you do.. and you use ONE for audio storage only.. and the other for your OS and ALL progs.. including CEP. Ive never heard of partitioning CEP seperate from your OS... and it seems like it wouldnt help.. in fact it seems like it would slow your shit down, considering CEP and your OS need to interact....BUT Ive never tried it, so I dont really know!

Anyway... if you have 2 hard drives.. Id back up everything, wipe the shittier of the two, and reinstall everything on it... including MSIM and CEP. Usually, I install my audio progs LAST.. because then Im sure their preferences are the last ones to get set, you know?

If you only have ONE drive, and you cant get another... wipe it, create 2 partitions... and put all your progs and OS in one, all your storage in the other.

Once you have a clean install.. its way easier to figure out why things work or not.

xoxo

argh.. need to get me another hard drive for sure... 10 gigs of backup that's just too much. Last time 2 of the discs were flawed arrrggghhh i got so pissed off. 1400 megs of sound files and patches

Prolly need a new hard drive anyway...
Right now i've minimized my buffer in cooledit and that seems to help, but now processing is so agonizingly slow. I'll rob a bank and get a new hard drive, thanx!

I may be wrong but but I'll bet MS Messenger is running in the background and you just don't realize it. I believe it likes to install itself on the start menu.

Try this: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/ Sytem Information. Then click on the "Tools" tab followed by "System Configuration Utillity" and then click on the "Sartup" tab.

I bet you'll find MSM is on there. If so, uncheck it and then restart and your problem should go away. While you're at it, uncheck any Calendar Reminders, Virus utillities, and anything else you don't need to have constantly running such as a scanner app etc. And for goodness sake disable that dumb MS Fast Find. (You have to do it from the control panel.) That ones a killer!

MSM does seem to dissapear from the task menu, even from the background...

Hmmm never heard of MS Fast Find.. what is it?

Anyway. I got the crap to work, but with peanut size buffers ... so even though it works, CEP is working REAL slow... argh...

Find Fast is a Windows program that makes your programs open up much faster than they otherwise would. I'm not really sure how it works but I guess it's something along the lines of a cashe or temp file. Anyhow, it hangs up a lot. If you're sure you're not having trouble with it then I guess you might as well leave it alone for now. Whenever your machine does hang though, always use "control-alternate-delete" (press all 3 at once) to see which program is not responding, if your keyboard will still work to allow you to do that.

It seems obvious to me that you've got to have some kind of program running in the background that's taking up a lot of your system resources. Look at your startup programs (the way I told you to before) for the culprit, it's in there somewhere. Well...I guess it could be a hardware malfunction or something else but its probably a running program. Good luck with it buddy.

PS, you didn't mention how big your HD is but you did mention that it had a lot of stuff on it. Could it be that you have it nearly full? That will really slow you down. You should have your HD about half open at all times. So, if you're using 10 gig of space get at least a 20 gig drive etc. Also, if you've got so much music hanging around on your drive why not get a CDRW to put that stuff on? Do you really need it all on your HD? Just a thought....

Find Fast is a Microsoft Office add on NOT an OS applet.

What your thinking of as far as having apps load faster is part of of Disk defrag on Windows 98. You can choose to have it rearrange your programs so they open faster, but it takes a lot of system use to make it happen correctly.

What find fast does is to full text index all your documents so that you can search them for specific information. It runs constantly in the background updating disk information on every file you touch, and updating it's database. Unless your a lawyer or use the same phrases and text in multiple documents very frequently you don't need it!

As for why MSN is making you have a time limit on tracks, I dunno! But MSN can be un-installed and it ussually, "ussually" leaves no trace once that is completed. I would ask you to check what is running at the time you have issues. Press ALT-CTRL-DEL and list everything that is there. Once we have that information we can help you kill the applet that is causing you this issue.

Good luck.
