recording levels

When recording from tape or record to my Marantz CD recorder, should I be adjusting CD recorder levels to just below the overload level, or should I try to match the levels to the source level so that they are roughly the same in volume. By matching the levels from the source to the CD recorder, the indicated levels on the cd recorder are often three or four segments below the overload level. What's the right way to set recording levels in these situations
