HI! I have been watching/reading here for a while and this hasn't come up (and if it has, I am VERY sorry) ! I am trying to setup a "room" (and it really is just a room) to record some drum tracks and some guitar. The problem (as in most cases) is the neighbors. I need to make one wall as "soundproof" as possible. I think the biggest problem is the window I have some insulation over it but it dosen't seem to dull the sound enough. Is there any tricks or any products that I could buy to close off the window?? I have some foam to put on the walls.. but I need to take care of the window first.. any suggestions?
Thanks soooooo much in advance : - ) |

The easiest way to do something like that is to make a wooden frame around the window frame, screwed firmly into the frame surround.
Before you attach the frame, you fit some bolts (# dependent on window size), recessed, from the rear, so they stick out at the front 2" Next, you get 2 pieces of ply, 1/2" is sufficient, to fit the frame, and one piece of soundboard. Make (glue) this into a sandwich, with the soundboard in the middle. note there: if you don't care about looks, get some standard rough ply, for looks and slightly better performance, use finishing ply (finished one side is a lot cheaper). When your sandwich is finished, drill holes to fit the bolts on the frame. Now, get some 35 year chaulk. Start with putting a small circle of chaulk on the inside of the sandwich, around the bolt-holes. Then lay 2 strips of chaulk around the whole sandwich, make sure you make them nice and even. Let the whole thing dry for 3 to 4 days, so the chaulk is properly cured. Then put it over your window, and secure it with washers and wing-nuts. Window sound problem gone. |
