Can't beat the price. Unless of course they paid you to read it.
(I'm more than happy with free.) Queue

This is my first post here. Hello to everyone!
Tape Op also has a book out of past interviews and stuff. I came across it a week or two ago at a local book store and picked it up. Unfortanetly, the book wasn't free but well worth the money. |

Yeah, what's so weird is that i received the Tape Op book in the mail today! I'm already excited reading the first few pages, seems really great. I've read some of the mag while in stores, but I should be getting my first (free!) issue in a month or so I think...
But I guess Tape Op is mostly ananlog..which is good for me, now I dont feel bad for having these analog 4 & 8 tracks! I really think it's great, and quite economical. |

The book has been a great read. Almost finished it in one sitting. Definately another point of reference, along with the mags.

but has anyone seen "Home Recording" magazine? It's a pretty good mag, but not free.
BTW, Frampton is in the recent issue of "Home Recording". Frampton has a home studio in his Ohio home, that's based around a Mackie 24/96 24 track HD recorder. |

Home Recording is a sad sad little magazine. At one time it had a few decent articles, now it's all teen beat and advertisements. Ever read a negative review in HR? You never will. Personal insights from the authors? Nah. I've still got a subscription to Home Recording, but it's not very often I read any of the articles, and if I do, I rarely find myself learning anything new that can be applied. I guess I did a couple years ago though.
Tape Op is by and far the best thing since sliced bread. I am so thankful for it and literally can't wait for the next issue. It's a magazine that's really a LOT like this BBS here. Real down to earth. Easy on the gloss. Interviews with people LIKE US. Plus, how to turn an MXL2001 into a tube mic! And free, so WTF. I need to get that damn book too, I keep forgetting.EQ is a good magazine too...but I find it hard to read it's so compressed. I definately like it. Mix is ok too, although I've only seen a couple issues and they deal mostly with $$$ gear. Recording magazine is GREAT. I really need to subscribe to it. A few months ago there was an article by Scott Dorsey about simple microphone designs (with SCHEMATICS) and how they determine the sound of the microphone. Another article in that same issue about loudspeaker construction. Great stuff, and not cheesed over. Slackmaster 2000

Not yet Q. He lives in Indian Hill from what I understand which puts him about 25 miles away.
Plus the IH folks tend not to mix with the common folk.... *lol*You can't even get into their country club unless you are "old money"...I'm sure Mr Frampton doesn't like that...

EQ and Recording, I probably glanced at a few times on the newsstand, but never bought one. It probably didn't excite me too much, not that they're bad mags, or anything, I'm neutral on that.
Mix magazine, definitely is a pro-studio level mag, an "industry" mag. I've seen quite a more few Mix magazines, than the others, and I have a pretty good feel of what's in Mix. It's a gigantic, highly technical magazine, but the home user might tend to burn out on Mix, because it showcases all the gear that's usually way-way out of the reach of the common home recording enthusiast. I picked up Home Recording magazine, I guess, primarily for the Frampton home-studio article. -You may think Home Recording mag is 'sucky' or something, but I don't necessarily agree. I think this recording mag is as 'sucky' as the other ones, 'cause these mags are basically a vehicle to push the latest products, which BTW, I'm no big fan of. I'm a vintage reel analog home recording enthusiast, and theres virtually no mag that caters directly to my specific interests. I don't feel the need to ogle over the latest portable digital workstation, or read reviews of the latest DAW software. That's just not where my head's at. I like when I can find general recording discussions in these mags, and not the product-specific stuff, necessarily. -Hey, I just picked up this one Home Recording mag recently, and I typically don't follow those mags. I did follow them, years ago, but I basically got burned out on them, for the reasons listed above. /DA |
