Lightbulb Creed's (Stapps) vocals

I'm an aspiring home recordist and I've recently been getting into Ntrack for recording some demos. I havn't been able to get this off my mind, and havn't had much luck at finding the answer on the net, so maybe someone here can help out.

I've been trying to get a similar vocal presence as creed's lead singer (stapp I believe), more specifically on their song "Torn'. When he sings "Toooorrrrrnnnn", it sounds as if the eq on his voice is boosted and matched with the driving frequencies of the heavy guitar (if that makes any sense at all). I don't listen to creed now, but I remeber this from when I used to be an avid listener.

How did they achieve this? Is it as simple as finding the driving frequencies (for lack of a better word) in the guitar and boost that in the vocals? or does he use special effects to do this? I know he's using reverb, but it seems as if theres more involved.

Or maybe coming off that line of thought, what are some common vocal techniques used in bands that have a strong guitar/vocal harmony? This is my main motivation here. I sound nothing like stapp, but I want that same hamony with the guitar track in my mix. I think creed did an excellent job of matching vocals with their guitar tracks.

thanks for the help.

First you have to get them soundig at its best at least in your mind before even thinking of recording them. Of course you can play with effects and stuff while recording which gives you lots of ideas that may change your mind about the way your song should be like.

I do not really know what stapp's process is, but I'm sure he sucks when singing live.

He actually doesn't. I took my wife's little brother to see them a few years ago, and he's really not a bad vocalist....or at least, he doesn't sound much different live compared to the album.

The other guys in the "band" meaning the guitar player, session bassist, and drummer have the stage precense of algae.

They're just rolling on a big reverb as he holds the note out. Sounds like they use chorus in some other spots.

Seen Stapp live, he's also about as exciting as algae.

how to get creeds vocal sound

Well i have studied the sound, having had heard it at least several times, and this is how you get it:

You start with a talentless bible beating moron. Now, some overlook this part of the recipe. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GET THE CREED SOUND WITH ANYTHING LESS THAN THE MOST TALENTLESS MORON YOU CAN FIND. It is a crucial ingredient.

Then you make him THINK in his own mind that he has something to offer the world in terms of musical value. Hopefully you are trying to sound like Creed in the POST GRUNGE world because only the POST GRUNGE music world would ever accept the elusive, primal, creed sound. Youre going to need to get some long hair on him (the singer). It cant be so long that he looks gay, but just long enough so that women with THINK he is attractive and daring and buy the records.

Next is another crucial step. Make sure he sings every word EVERY WORD with an annoyingly fake, sickening, RRRRRRRRRRR tone in his voice. Its a vocal technique that some people call "yarling". Make him do this enough publicly that it causes a completely unneccessary 10 decade long backlash against Alice in Chains and early Stone Temple Pilots.

After that, shit, age to perfection and there you fucking go!

Set the auto-tune to the Eddie Vedder setting.

I think someone hates Stapp. Is it because he is a sucessful musician (lots of money)? Are you jealous?

I think "successful" (correctly spelled) is relative. Do you think he is successful because he has money? Or does he have money because he is an accomplished musician.

I'm glad you didn't say he was an accomplished musician, because then it would have gone from an opinion to an incorrect statement.

I, personally, am not jealous of his musical talent, but i'd like the money. So ill throw this curveball in to clear it up:

-I'd rather win the lotto to equal his net worth than sell shitty cd's

-I'd rather win american idol or nashville star to gain a more "credible" (lol) entry into the music business then sell shitty cd's.

Its opinion, but i'd like to think he's a piece of shit, and 311 kicked his monkey ass. thats right, amber is the color of your energy... bitch.
