What Is Midi And How Do I Use It?

BASIC question i have no idea as to what midi is or does or for that matter how to use it?so any and all help is appreciated.i have a casio keyboard that is midi but don't know what midi is or how to use it?also i don't know how to play the piano so keyboard use is limited to what i bang out of it and cut up with acid to use.thanks
