Isolation Booth

I have a small project studio that I am trying to make a little more condusive to recording vocals. I'm not bothering with separate studio rooms because I simply don't have the funds or the space for it. But, I do however want to build a small (4X4) vocal booth in the corner of my room. The one room that have is 12'X12' so I don't have a lot of room to work with.

Anyway, does anyone have a good design for building a stand-alone booth? I don't want to damage the walls or anything (since I'm renting this space), so I'd rather just build it independent of the existing walls, i.e., the booth should have it's own four walls, ceiling, and possibly a floor if necessary. Any help would be a great. Thanks!!!

I should probably mention that, I was hoping to do the whole thing in $500. Am I crazy?

Plop the whole thing on a piece of carpet
Tack a piece of carpet on the ceiling

Aside from a few mic cables and jacks, you have yourself a cheap vocal booth. It works well too.

The double plywood makes for a sound barrier due to density. They should be glued AND screwed together. The studs mount in the corners of the four double-layer paneling, thus giving it support. You might even want to run a few pieces along the perimeter across the top for additional support, at the cost of two more 2x4's.

Caulk everything! Then, caulk it again!

Its not the perfect booth, but it works acceptably. Please keep that in mind.

The one I'm making is the same as I mentioned above, except its going to be hinged, so it can be folded to 1' thick against the wall.

This way its out of the way when unused.
